Smarty could travel a day early by Associated Press BENSALEM, Pa. -- Smarty Jones could be shipped to New York as early as Tuesday night to prepare for the Belmont Stakes.
Trainer John Servis said he may ship the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner a day earlier than expected to be there for the draw and avoid any hot weather on Wednesday.
"New York's dying for us to get up there," Servis said. "They have the draw and I really feel like I should be there for that. If it looks like it's going to be too bad of a day Wednesday, we'll go up there Tuesday night."
Smarty Jones had another strong, solo gallop Wednesday morning, with the undefeated colt going 1 5/8 miles on a closed track at Philadelphia Park. Servis said the colt would have another easy day on Thursday.
Smarty Jones will have his final tuneup before the June 5 Belmont on Friday. He's expected to breeze seven-eighths of a mile with jockey Stewart Elliott aboard.
With a win in the Belmont, the 3-year-old would become the 12th Triple Crown winner and first since Affirmed in 1978.
