LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- One by one, the leaders came calling on the seemingly docile par-3 14th hole Saturday. Few left unscathed.

Phil Mickelson? Bogey. Davis Love III? Bogey. Greg Chalmers? Bogey. Stuart Appleby? Bogey.

The 207-yard par-3, coming on the heels of Valhalla's signature 13th, took a bite out of the contenders at the PGA Championship.

By the time the last group of the day got to 14, Scott Dunlap and Tiger Woods were dead even. Woods had taken double-bogey two holes earlier at the 12th, while Dunlap had birdied the hole match Woods at 13-under.

Dunlap hit first. His 5-iron hit the bank in front of the green and trickled into the front bunker.

"I was right between a 4- and a 5-iron," Dunlap said. "I went for it and the ball ended up in a horrific spot in the bunker. So I didn't have much chance to get that up-and-down."

He didn't, blasting 20 feet past the hole and missing the par putt.

Woods stepped to the tee moments after Dunlap. Still steaming after his double-bogey, he took a 6-iron and hit the ball into the same bunker as Dunlap.

But unlike his playing partner, Woods nearly holed his bunker shot and tapped in for a par to regain the lead.

The 14th wasn't completely unkind. Notah Begay III birdied it. So did Tom Watson and Franklin Langham on their way to 65s. Paul Azinger birdied it on his way to a 66.

But the 14th took its toll as well. Mickelson shot 38 on the back nine. So did Love. Chalmers could have been playing in the next-to-last group of the day. And Appleby could have been in realistic striking distance.

Only 207 yards. But the final round will have a different flavor because of it.
