PALM DESERT, Calif. -- While the Kansas City Chiefs likely will take one last whack at a trade for the Rams' Trent Green, coach Dick Vermeil gave no indication that he is willing to meet the demands of first- and third-round draft picks as compensation.

	Trent Dilfer's leadership skills could be used in Kansas City.

"They've already got our second pick," said Vermeil. "It's hard for me not to include that in the equation when we talk to them."

Vermeil said that Troy Aikman's candidacy is "on the back burner while we pursue these other scenarios."

The other scenarios now include ex-Ravens quarterback Trent Dilfer and ex-Panthers quarterback Steve Beuerlein. Vermeil had what he termed an excellent visit with Dilfer last week.

"He exudes confidence and leadership, and I think he would have an infectious personality in our locker room, and our locker room needs that," said Vermeil. "I think our offense would bring out the best in him."

Vermeil discounted what appeared to be a growing interest in Purdue QB Drew Brees. The Chiefs had a large contingent at Brees' workout last week.

"I like him, but I'm not sure he's the 12th pick in the draft," said Vermeil. "That's why we need our No. 2 pick."

Jacksonville quarterback Mark Brunell remains a long shot for the Chiefs. Brunell is due a $2.5 million bonus on Saturday, and talks between the Jaguars and the quarterback have been hot and cold.

One source familiar with the negotiations between the Jaguars and Brunell said, "Emotions keep getting in the way," most likely referring to Jacksonville owner Wayne Weaver's distress with the talks. But getting rid of Brunell would cause the Jaguars to take a $6 million hit on the salary cap, which makes it more likely that a new deal will be struck by the week's end.
