ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- For the fourth time in five seasons, Houston Comets forward Sheryl Swoopes was the top vote-getter by fans in All-Star balloting for the WNBA All-Star game, receiving a league-record 124,575 votes.

Sheryl Swoopes
Sheryl Swoopes is averaging 14.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.2 steals.
Swoopes' teammates, forward Tina Thompson (81,825 votes) and guard Cynthia Cooper (60,418), will join her in the Western Conference starting lineup, though Cooper will miss the All-Star game after suffering a season-ending rotator cuff injury four games into the season. Sue Bird (89,174) of Seattle will start at guard and Los Angeles' Lisa Leslie (91,064) will start at center, rounding out the starting five based on the final voting totals released Monday.

Indiana Fever forward Tamika Catchings (112,812) received the most votes among Eastern Conference players. She is joined in the starting lineup by Washington's Chamique Holdsclaw (83,750) at forward, New York's Tari Phillips (81,402) at center, and the Liberty's Teresa Weatherspoon (79,137) and Charlotte's Dawn Staley (57,846) at guard.

Per league rules, WNBA President Val Ackerman will choose a replacement for Cooper on the Western Conference roster, and Western Conference head coach Michael Cooper will choose the two-time WNBA MVP's replacement in the starting lineup.

The 2003 WNBA All-Star game will be played July 12 at Madison Square Garden. Each conference's seven head coaches will select the remaining All-Star players, with the reserves to be announced on Wednesday. Richie Adubato of the New York Liberty will coach the Eastern Conference All-Stars.

Starters were determined by fans, who were able to vote at all WNBA arenas, as well as online. More than 2.78 million votes were cast, eclipsing the previous All-Star record by more than 300,000 (12 percent).

All ten starters have prior WNBA All-Star starting experience. Holdsclaw, Thompson and Weatherspoon are now five-time All-Stars. Leslie and Swoopes earned their fourth spots in the starting lineup.

Swoopes, who will participate in an online chat with fans at wnba.com at 1:30 p.m. ET Tuesday, also was honored as the league's top vote-getter in 1999, 2000 and 2002.

The WNBA All-Star Game is being televised nationally by ABC beginning at 4 p.m. ET. ESPN2 is hosting a half-hour pregame show beginning at 3:30 p.m. Fans may purchase tickets to the game by calling 1-877-WNBA-TIX, through all Ticketmaster outlets, online at WNBA.com and ticketmaster.com, and at the Madison Square Garden box office. Ticket prices start at $10.
