Stiles will have surgery to correct bursitis in right heel

Associated Press

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Los Angeles Sparks guard Jackie Stiles, the WNBA's rookie of the year in 2001, will not play this season in order to have surgery to correct bursitis in her right heel.

Stiles, the NCAA's career scoring leader in women's basketball, missed 11 games last year because of bursitis.

She played for the now-defunct Portland Fire before the Sparks selected her in the WNBA's dispersal draft.

Sparks general manager Penny Toler said Saturday that Stiles should be "100 percent ready to go" after the surgery.

Stiles averaged 14.9 points for the Fire in 2001. She led WNBA rookies in three-point shooting (43.1 percent) that year.
