Trade with Sun might be answer for Lynx

By Nancy Lieberman
Special to ESPN.com

As expected, Minnesota acquired Seattle's sixth overall pick. Now what?

Initially, most believed the Lynx would turn around and offer their two first-round picks, Nos. 6 and 7, to Charlotte for the third overall pick, where Minnesota would select point guard and hometown favorite Lindsay Whalen.

However, there's some speculation that Charlotte coach Trudi Lacey just can't pass up on the opportunity to draft Stanford's Nicole Powell at No. 3. And that means Minnesota instead would have to focus its trade negotiations on Connecticut, which has the fourth overall pick -- and is in desperate need of a point guard.

Some of the initial negotiations have been said to include Minnesota giving up the sixth and seventh picks and Helen Darling for the Sun's No. 4 pick. Connecticut would also need to put a post player in the deal to help the Lynx replace Janell Burse, who was traded to Seattle on Thursday. Other packages would include Minnesota holding onto that seventh pick to draft a big, and second- or third-round picks might come into play, too.

Whalen, who led Minnesota to the Final Four, has said she would prefer to stay close to home and play for the Lynx, so that might factor into Connecticut's trade decisions, too.

And keep in mind that Sun coach Mike Thibault might not be as desperate for a point guard as we think. He does have other options, including a standout in Greece who recently scored 44 points in a Euro game. Several WNBA players have referred to this point guard as a great passer and scorer.
