| | Gary Miller |
Up Close, one of ESPN's longest-running signature programs along with SportsCenter, features one-on-one interviews with the top newsmakers and celebrities in the world of sports.
Up Close is hosted by 10-year ESPN veteran Gary Miller, who assumed the prestigious position this past January 11th. Prior to becoming the third host for Up Close, Miller hosted Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter and anchored ESPN's on-site coverage for the World Series, MLB Playoffs, and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies.
Up Close is based in ESPN's Los Angeles studio, featuring predominantly face-to-face in-studio interviews with the top athletes, coaches, and sports personalities, with an occasional newsmaker hooked up by satellite. The show also goes on the road each year to the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, MLB All-Star Game, Kentucky Derby and The Masters, and other events.
Up Close has been the pre-eminent sports interview show since 1984, when it was titled Sportslook and hosted by Roy Firestone. Firestone hosted the daily show until 1994, when Chris Myers took over. Firestone is still one of the most prominent personalities at ESPN, hosting Up Close Primetime, a night-time special that runs once or twice a month and features face-to-face interviews exclusively.
Here is just a small sample of the highlights of Miller's first year hosting Up Close:
Jan. 11 - Troy Aikman is Miller's first guest as permanent host of the show.
Feb. 10 - Lawrence Taylor discusses the Hall of Fame and his drug problems.
Feb. 19 - Dennis Rodman appears in-studio just before signing with the Lakers.
Mar. 30 - Jim Calhoun speaks one day after winning the NCAA Championship.
Apr. 12 - Ricky Williams and Tim Couch in-studio together five days before the NFL Draft.
July 15 - Ted Williams appears on Up Close two days after the All-Star Game.
July 20 - David Cone discusses his perfect game two days after the historic event.
Aug. 9 - Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs speak up on the Monday after their 3,000th hits.
Aug. 17 - Mark McGwire talks about his 500th home run.
Sept. 1 - Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis throw verbal jabs together in-studio.
Oct. 11 - Brett Favre joins Gary Miller the day after his 30th birthday and a tremendous comeback victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
