Decisive weekend in Italian Serie A

 May 12, 2000

Heading into the final round of Italian Serie A competition, Juventus can secure its 26th Scudetto with a win over #12 Perugia at Stadio Renato Curi in Perugia, telecast LIVE by ESPN Pac Rim on Sunday, May 14 at 12.55 GMT (10:55 pm AEST). To update viewers on the progress of #2 Lazio versus Reggina match, ESPN Pac Rim will provide LIVE cut-ins during the Juventus-Perugia match.

Juventus remained atop Serie A with a controversial 1-0 win against Parma, keeping the league leaders two points ahead of Lazio. Fan-favorite Alessandro Del Piero netted the game-winner for Juve, but a disallowed Parma goal left the victory tainted and Juventus surrounded in controversy leading into its decisive match.

Perugia has managed to stay above relegation for the second straight season and enters the match on 39 points, the same total the club had accumulated at this point last year. Now they hope to avoid delivering the Serie A championship two years running. It was Perugia who surrendered at home to AC Milan on the final matchday of the 98/99 campaign, handing AC Milan the league title. Perugia faces an uphill climb, with the club's last victory against Juventus coming in 1979.

Juventus defeated Perugia 3-0 at Stadio Delle Alpi in Turin on January 16. Del Piero scored on a penalty kick; French national Zinedine Zidane and sustitute Darko Kovacevic each contributed a goal.

ESPN Pacific Rim to telecast Lazio vs. Reggina or AC Milan vs. Udinese on Monday, May 15

Depending on the outcome of the Juventus-Perugia match, ESPN Pacific Rim will telecast either Lazio v. Reggina or AC Milan v. Udinese on Monday, May 15 at 14.00 GMT (Tuesday, May 15 12 am AEST) on a tape-delay.

If Juventus loses on Sunday, Lazio will be playing for first place and that match will be telecast. However, a Juventus win, securing the Turin side the Scudetto, will give greater meaning to the outcome of the AC Milan-Udinese match, as both teams vie for Champions League and UEFA Cup berths.
