VIENNA, Austria -- Wimbledon champion Roger Federer defeated Spaniard David Ferrer 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the CA Tennis Trophy on Tuesday.
The top-seeded Federer is 63-14 this season, tied with Andy Roddick for the most wins on tour. Federer will next play Slovak qualifier Karol Beck, who eliminated American James Blake 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
Third-seeded Jiri Novak, a finalist last year, was upset by Spain's Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 7-6 (4), while fifth-seeded Agustin Calleri eased into the second round after beating Mariano Zabaleta 6-4, 6-2.
Also, American Vincent Spadea advanced to the second round after Italy's Davide Sanguinetti developed stomach problems and retired in the third set with the score 6-7 (4), 6-4, 1-0. |
