VIENNA, Austria -- Former tournament champion Tim Henman thrashed Stefano Pescosolido 6-2, 6-3 in the first round Monday of the CA Tennis Trophy. Henman, who won here three years ago, had no problems against Pescosolido, who seemed tired after going two previous rounds to qualify for the main draw. Fourth-seeded Sjeng Schalken beat qualifier Alexander Waske 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in his tournament opener. After playing a faulty first set, Schalken rolled through the last two, capitalizing on his hard serve. Sixth-seeded Tommy Robredo lost a 2-hour, 20-minute thriller to local player Jurgen Melzer 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3). No. 7 Nicolas Massu lost 5-7, 6-7 (4) to Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina. In another upset, Jarkko Nieminen ousted the Karol Kucera 7-6 (4), 6-0 in their first-ever meeting. Despite support from more than 500 fans who traveled to Vienna from neighboring Slovakia, Kucera, a 1998 finalist here, never got back to the match after losing the tiebreak. Jonas Bjorkman beat qualifier Fillipo Volandri 6-1, 6-4. |
