Top seed Mandula advances on tiebreaker

Associated Press

ASHKENT, Uzbekistan -- Sixth-seeded Jill Craybas of the United States advanced to the second round of the Tashkent Open on Tuesday, defeating Evgenia Kulikovskaya of Russia 6-1, 6-1.

Top-seeded Petra Mandula of Hungary also won in the first round with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over wild card Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan. Amanmuradova was up 3-1 in the tiebreaker, then lost six consecutive points.

Rain canceled all matches Monday, forcing organizers to postpone the start of the $140,000 WTA tournament.

Other seeded players to win were: No. 2 Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland, No. 3 Saori Obata of Japan, No. 4 Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain, No. 5 Flavia Pennetta of Italy, No. 7 Angelique Widjaja of Indonesia and No. 8 Jelena Kostanic of Croatia.
