ASHKENT, Uzbekistan -- Sixth-seeded Jill Craybas of the
United States advanced to the second round of the Tashkent Open on
Tuesday, defeating Evgenia Kulikovskaya of Russia 6-1, 6-1.
Top-seeded Petra Mandula of Hungary also won in the first round
with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over wild card Akgul Amanmuradova of
Uzbekistan. Amanmuradova was up 3-1 in the tiebreaker, then lost
six consecutive points.
Rain canceled all matches Monday, forcing organizers to postpone
the start of the $140,000 WTA tournament.
Other seeded players to win were: No. 2 Emmanuelle Gagliardi of
Switzerland, No. 3 Saori Obata of Japan, No. 4 Virginia Ruano
Pascual of Spain, No. 5 Flavia Pennetta of Italy, No. 7 Angelique
Widjaja of Indonesia and No. 8 Jelena Kostanic of Croatia.
