TASHKENT, Uzbekistan -- The start of the Tashkent Open was postponed until Tuesday because of rain. Petra Mandula of Hungary is seeded first in the $140,000 WTA tournament. Rain fell much of Monday, wiping out matches involving fifth-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy, sixth-seeded Jill Craybas of the United States and eighth-seeded Jelena Kostanic of Croatia. Craybas has a 4-0 lead over Russia's Evgenia Kulikovskaya and France's Stephanie Foretz holds a 3-1 advantage against the Czech Republic's Renata Voracova. Uzbekistan's Iroda Tulyaganova, winner of the 2000 Tashkent Open, will miss the tournament because of elbow surgery that will keep her out two months, Uzbek tennis officials said. Information from The Associated Press and SportsTicker was used in this report. |
