BALI, Indonesia -- Venezuela's Maria Vento-Kabchi ousted third-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain on Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Wismilak International tennis event.

Vento-Kabchi posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over last year's runner-up at this $225,000 hardcourt tournament and reached her third quarterfinal in her past six events. She appeared in the round of 16 at Birmingham on grass and the semifinals at Stanford in July.

Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi will be Vento-Kabchi's next opponent after defeating Croatian qualifier Ivana Abramovic 6-1, 7-5. Gagliardi arrived in Bali on a four-match losing streak and a loser in seven of her last nine. This is her first quarterfinal since Madrid in May.

Fifth seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand beat Chinese qualifier Jie Zheng 6-4, 6-3. Tanasugarn is coming off a fourth-round showing at the U.S. Open last week. She will next face second-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva.

Local favorite Angelique Widjaja topped former doubles partner Tathiana Garbin of Italy 7-5, 6-3. Widjaja captured the title here two years ago as a wild card in her WTA Tour debut. She has consecutive victories for the first time since Indian Wells in March.

The winner collects $35,000 and 145 rankings points.
