"It was a very good and tight game," said Widjaja, who has won just one title since a victory at this tournament in 2001. "I needed this victory. It meant a lot because I haven't performed well this year."

In other matches, top-seeded Chanda Rubin beat Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 6-2, 6-2, No. 2 Elena Dementieva defeated Anna Lena Groenefeld 6-4, 6-1, and No. 3 Conchita Martinez got past Arantxa Parra 6-1, 7-6 (5).
