Fusion name Hudson interim coach

 Associated Press

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The struggling Miami Fusion fired coach Ivo Wortmann on Monday and hired television analyst Ray Hudson as interim coach.

Wortmann, hired in July 1998, had a record of 21-28-4 with the Fusion. This year they are last in the Eastern Division with a 1-3-4 record and last in the MLS in wins and goals. During one stretch they went 457 minutes without scoring, a team record.

"We have not been pleased with the team's efforts and results so far this season and felt a change needed to be made," general manager Doug Hamilton said in a statement. "It's a long season, and we fully expect to be in the mix at playoff time."

Hudson, 45, has been an analyst at Fusion games for 2½ seasons and works as their community outreach manager. He's a former midfielder and captain for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

"He knows our players well and will do a solid job until a permanent replacement is found," Hamilton said.

"I'm proud and pleased to respond to the bugle," Hudson said.

Strength and conditioning coach Sidney Zabeau was also fired. Assistant coach Nick Megaloudis was reassigned to the front office as a team administrator, and former U.S. National Team forward Eric Eichmann was hired as an assistant coach.
