Welton hits OT winner

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Welton scored in the eighth minute of overtime Wednesday night to give the Miami Fusion, playing their first game under interim coach Ray Hudson, a 1-0 victory over D.C. United.

Welton, who entered the match in the 67th minute, received a pass from former United forward Roy Lassiter, dribbled into the penalty area and unloaded an 18-yard shot inside the right post to beat goalkeeper Tom Presthus.

Hudson replaced the fired Ivo Wortmann on Monday.

The victory was the first for the Fusion (2-3-4) since beating New York/New Jersey 3-1 on March 26 and lifted them into a tie for first place with New England in the Eastern Division.

United (2-6-1), the defending MLS champion, remained in last place in the division.

Although both teams made several runs on goal in the second half, neither had serious scoring chances.

United had the best scoring opportunity of the first half, when Chris Albright's point-blank shot was deflected by goalkeeper Nick Rimando and bounced off the right post in the ninth minute.

Presthus made a diving save of a shot by Diego Serna in the 41st minute, Miami's best scoring threat of the first half.
