SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Abdul Thompson Conteh scored in the 69th minute as the San Jose Earthquakes salvaged a 2-2 tie with slumping D.C. United.

Conteh finished off a nice passing sequence to get the Earthquakes even. Dario Brose sent a corner kick to the near goalpost, where Jimmy Conrad neatly headed the ball to the back post. Conteh worked his way free and volleyed a shot into the goal from five yards out.

After San Jose (2-3-2) opened the scoring, United's dynamic combination of Marco Etcheverry and Jaime Moreno put D.C. in front.

Etcheverry scored off a free kick from just outside the box in the 33rd minute. The United captain picked up his third goal of the season on a bending shot just to right of the arc that beat goalkeeper Joe Cannon to the near post.

Moreno found space in the box and pounced on a loose ball that was kept alive by striker A.J. Wood. Moreno beat Cannon from 10 yards for his team-leading fourth goal in the 44th minute.

San Jose struck first on a goal created by Conteh. The striker from Senegal made a quick run through the center of the United defense, sliding past Etcheverry at midfield. Conteh worked around Geoff Aunger before Carlos Llamosa took him down. Ronald Cerritos connected on the penalty kick in the 20th minute.

The goal was Cerritos' fourth of the season and his second successful penalty kick.

United, the three-time MLS champions, have just one win in their first six games.

Both teams were able to generate chances late in the second half as well as in overtime. Goalkeeper Mark Simpson, starting for the first time in place of Tom Presthus, made a couple of big stops, including a diving save on Richard Mulrooney's blast from 20 yards.

Second-half substitute Michael Burke, a rookie who replaced Wood at halftime, had a tricky back heel shot stopped by Cannon. Another rookie, 16-year-old Bobby Convey, came off the bench for United in the second half.
