SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Ronald Cerritos' last-minute heroics led the Clash to a 2-1 shootout victory Saturday night over the struggling MetroStars, extending their MLS-record losing streak to 11 matches.

The MetroStars looked strong for the majority of the game, but Cerritos struck with a mere 23 seconds left, forcing the shootout.

The Metros took an early lead in the ninth minute, when midfielder Billy Walsh redirected Sasa Curcic's corner kick past Clash goalkeeper Joe Cannon. San Jose is the only team in the MLS that holds a winning record (8-6) when surrendering the first goal.

The MetroStars benefitted from the outstanding play of rookie 'keeper Tim Howard, who maintained a scoreless outing for 89:37 while facing 16 San Jose shots and 22 Clash scoring opportunities. Howard, a native of North Brunswick, New Jersey, is a Project-40 allocation to the MetroStars.

The Clash stunned the Metros in the 90th minute, when Cerritos collected an attempted defensive clear and immediately launched a shot into the lower left hand corner of the net with only 23 seconds left on the clock.

"When the ball came to me," Cerritos said, "I just dropped it and shot. That's all you can do with so little time left."

Cannon entered the game as the most successful MLS goalkeeper in shootout play with 16 saves in attempts. He saved shots from Mike Sorber and Mark Semioli, while allowing goals by Peter Villegas, Miles Joseph and Ramiro Corrales.

Howard's impressive outing came to a close when Clash defender John Doyle's thunderous shot bounced off of the stunned `keeper and into the net in the seventh round of the shootout.

San Jose (14-10, 22 points) recorded its 10th shootout victory this season and is a franchise-record four games over .500.
