Minnesota was able to go out and get at least one established player at each position in the expansion draft. But perhaps the most important acquisition made by GM Doug Risebrough was Jacques Lemaire as head coach. This team will not blow anybody away with their offensive talent, but Lemaire knows a thing or two about defense. He won a Stanley Cup as coach of the Devils in '95 by employing a stifling neutral-zone trap. Minnesota will defeat teams this season by putting them to sleep; unfortunately, that's the only way this team has a chance of winning in '00-01.

Here's a look at the rest of Minnesota's training camp.

Biggest question mark: Scoring
Short-term, players like Sergei Krivokrasov, Scott Pellerin and Darby Hendrickson should all break into the double-digit range in goal scoring this season. After those four, there could be quite a dropoff. Longshots to help out include players like Stacy Roest and Darryl Laplante.

Biggest position battle: No. 1 goalie
Jamie McLennan has solid experience from his days with St. Louis, although he will face many more shots in Minnesota than he did in St. Louis. Manny Fernandez, plucked from Dallas, will give McLennan a good run for the No. 1 spot. It's a tough call for the Wild. Fernandez is younger, and likely better. But with so many shots expected, Minnesota doesn't want the young talent to be thrown into the fire for his first significant string of NHL starts.

Future watch
Here, ESPN.com looks at one or two young players who could make an impact, either now or in the future.

Marian Gaborik (Left wing):
The Wild took Gaborik third overall in the '00 draft. Gaborik has excellent puckhandling skills and skates exceptionally well in tight spaces. The 18-year-old scored 25 goals in just 50 games in the Czech Elite League last season. If he shows Lemaire that he is solid in the defensive end, he'll make the team.

Darryl Laplante (Center):
This was one guy the Detroit Red Wings did not want to lose. Detroit left the 23-year-old center unprotected in the expansion draft, and he was snatched up by the Wild. He has only played 35 career NHL games -- including 30 last season -- but that's because of the depth in Detroit. The former third-round pick (58th overall) in '95 should get plenty of ice time this season.
