A new era has been ushered in for the 2000-01 season. After 20 years under the reign of Glen Sather, the Oilers leave their fate in the hands of GM Kevin Lowe and head coach Craig MacTavish. This will be no easy task for the duo who won Cups in Edmonton and with the Rangers. In his first trade as GM, Lowe dealt top scoring defenseman Roman Hamrlik to the Islanders in exchange for defenseman Eric Brewer and left wing Josh Green. That leaves MacTavish with a short list of offensive-minded defensemen -- Tom Poti and Janne Niinimaa -- setting up a battle for blueline spots in training camp.
Here's a look at the rest of Edmonton's training camp.
Biggest question: Depth on offense
The top line of Doug Weight, Ryan Smyth and Bill Guerin combined to score 73 goals last season -- accounting for over 32 percent of the offense. That means that the Oilers will be depending on Chad Kilger, Todd Marchant, Josh Green, Ethan Moreau and Mike Grier to fill the gap on the second line. Combined, those five players scored just 58 times last season, or an average of about 11 goals each. Depth at forward will be a concern.
Position battles: Defense, goalie
The top three spots on defense are set: with Janne Niinimaa, Tom Poti and Igor Ulanov. It will be a dogfight in camp for the last four. Youngsters Sean Brown, Chris Hajt and Eric Brewer will compete to fill out the top two pairings. The eldest of the trio is Brown, at the ripe old age of 23. Brad Norton, Alex Henry, Alexei Semenov and Terran Sandwith will battle with the other two for the remaining three openings.
There's also an interesting battle shaping up between the pipes. Unknowns Alexandre Fomitchev and Eric Heffler will duel it out in training camp for the right to back up Tommy Salo. Fomitchev spent last season in the WHL, while Heffler went 11-25-7 for Hamilton of the AHL.
Future watch
Here, ESPN.com looks at one or two young players who could make an impact, either now or in the future.
Michael Henrich (Right wing):
Henrich was Edmonton's first choice (13th overall) in '98. The hulking right wing (6-foot-2, 206 pounds) scored 30 or more goals in each of his three seasons playing for Barrie of the OHL. Despite his large frame, Henrich is not very physical, averaging under one penalty minute per contest in juniors. However, he does use his size to his advantage when driving to the net.
Jani Rita (Right wing):
Edmonton's first pick (13th overall) in the '99 draft is not your protypical Finnish-born forward. He's pretty large (6-foot-1, 206 pounds) and at age 19, still has some growing to do. The Oilers project him to be a good offensive player, but the right wing still needs some seasoning. Expect Rita to have a chance of cracking the Edmonton lineup in September, 2001. Until then, he'll likely play in the Finnish Elite League.
