The Leafs have put together back-to-back 40-plus win seasons for only the second time in franchise history -- they did it '92-94. But the Leafs failed to make it past the conference finals last spring after reaching hockey's version of the "Final Four" in '99. General manager Pat Quinn decided his team has plenty of talent, but lacked playoff toughness.

Enter Shayne Corson, Gary Roberts and Dave Manson. All three were signed via free agency in an effort to make the Leafs grittier. The club has been knocked in recent campaigns for having too many skilled Europeans and not enough tough players. Corson, Roberts and Manson will surely add some snarl to the Leafs' camp.

Here's a look at the rest of Toronto's training camp.

Question: Good enough on D?
Only three playoff teams -- Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Phoenix -- allowed more goals during the regular season than Toronto's 222. The Leafs seem to have defensemen who are either too concerned with offense -- Dimitri Yushkevich and Tomas Kaberle to name two -- or too inexperienced -- Danny Markov and Chris McAllister. The Leafs are thin on defense, especially after the serious eye injury suffered by Bryan Berard.

Manson will help stabilize the defensive corps and add some depth at the same time. In addition, 20-year-old rookie Petr Svoboda will be given every opportunity to make the big club in training camp, forcing veterans like Gerald Diduck and Cory Cross to shape up or face the prospect of losing valuable ice time.

Biggest position battle: Center
Toronto is deep at all three forward positions, but the biggest training camp battle will come at center ice. Mats Sundin is No. 1. After him, Nik Antropov, Yanic Perreault and Igor Korolev are all capable of manning the second-line center position on most teams. All three will battle for the No. 2 spot in Toronto. On the lower end, competition comes from Alyn McCauley, along with rookies Luca Cereda and Jeff Farkas. As many as five players could be battling for the final two spots on the depth chart.

Future watch
Here, ESPN.com looks at one or two young players who could make an impact, either now or in the future.

Petr Svoboda (Defense):
Not to be confused with the other Petr Svoboda, also a defenseman who currently plays for Tampa Bay, the younger Svoboda was taken in the second round (35th overall) by Toronto in '98. He's not going to produce a lot in the way of offense, but Svoboda is dependable in his own end and can make that one, crisp pass to get the puck out of the zone.

Luca Cereda (Center):
The native of Lugano, Switzerland, was taken in the first round (24th overall) by Toronto in '99 and doesn't get pushed around at 6-foot-2, 203 pounds. He uses that large frame to drive to the net well. Because of his size, the center will be given a long look by the Maple Leafs.

Training camp roster
Goaltenders: Sebastien Centomo, Glenn Healy, Jamie Hodson, Curtis Joseph, Vladimir Kulikov, Jimmy Waite.

Forwards: Vladimir Antipov, Nik Antropov, Syl Apps, Sergei Berezin, Brad Boyes, Luca Cereda, Shayne Corson, Tie Domi, Jeff Farkas, Jonathan Gagnon, Mikael Hankansson, Jonas Hoglund, Bobby House, Konstantin Kalmikov, Dmitri Khristich, Igor Korolev, Jacques Lariviere, Don MacLean, Adam Mair, Alyn McCauley, Frantisek Mrazek, Yanic Perreault, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Gary Roberts, Jason Sessa, Mats Sundin, Steve Thomas, Shawn Thornton, Michael Travnicek, Darcy Tucker, Garry Valk, Morgan Warren.
