The Canadiens enter camp with new fringe players such as Jim Campbell, Enrico Ciccone and P.J. Stock trying to make the club. If the Habs suffer as many injuries as last season, those players could see a good dose of ice time. The club lost leadership with the departure of veteran Shayne Corson, who signed with Toronto. One of the reasons GM Rejean Houle didn't do much this offseason was because of the franchise's impending sale. When Molson, Inc. put the Canadiens up for sale, Houle's hands were tied. Houle also wants to see how well his club can play when everybody is healthy.

Here's a look at the rest of Montreal's training camp.

Biggest question: Balance
Only two players -- Martin Rucinsky and Sergei Zholtok -- scored more than 20 goals last season. It must be a sigh of relief that Rucinsky will be in camp, and hopefully, a healthy Trevor Linden, Brian Savage and Benoit Brunet will add to the 20-goal club. But if they don't step up their collective production, who will score goals?

Look for rookies like Mike Ribiero and Eric Chouinard to make a push for jobs. Ribiero, 20, scored 18 goals in 23 games in the QMJHL last season and actually spent 19 games with the Habs, notching a goal and an assist. Chouinard is a 6-foot-3, 202-pound center who scored 50 goals in as many games last season for Quebec in the QMJHL. He has an excellent shot at cracking the lineup.

And keep an eye on Campbell, who could be on the way back to his 20-goal form from a few years back in St. Louis.

Biggest position battle: Defense
Eric Weinrich, Patrice Brisebois, Sheldon Souray and Karl Dykhuis are pretty much locked into the top four spots on defense. However, the last three are wide open. Going into camp, Ciccone and Craig Rivet will have the early edge over youngsters like Francis Bouillon, Christian Laflamme and Miloslav Guren. If Ciccone and Rivet have problems locking up the No. 5 and 6 spots, look for some surprise competition from 20-year-old Andrei Markov and 21-year-old Ilkka Mikkola. Both played in Europe last season, but will be given an equal opportunity to make the club. Markov could be the sleeper. He notched 11 goals in 29 games for Moscow Dynamo and could be just what the doctor ordered for the offensively-challenged Canadiens.

Future watch
Here, ESPN.com looks at one or two young players who could make an impact, either now or in the future.

Eric Chouinard (Center):
Chouinard, a native of Atlanta, was a first-round pick (16th overall) in '98 and has good range and mobility at 6-foot-3, 202 pounds. He controls the puck well through traffic and is also an excellent passer. He is just 20-years-old.

Alexander Buturlin (Right wing):
Playing in the Russian Elite League the last couple of seasons, the 5-foot-11, 183-pound defenseman has shown he is more comfortable playing in his own end. He clears the puck well and does not panic in key situations. Buturlin could show some offensive ability down the line, but for now, the Habs are counting on their '99 second-round pick (39th overall) to make their squad as a stay-at-home defenseman.
