Maple Leafs colors shine bright

 Nov. 1, 1999

It's time to give the Maple Leafs their due. Coach Pat Quinn's bunch is hot, going 4-0-1 during a recent homestand. Let's see if they can keep it up on the road. The Flyers and Bruins climbed out of the dumps, each doing it without their best player. And watch out Rangers fans because this week's tilt with the rival Islanders isn't as lopsided as it should be.

ESPN.com's secret formula has taken it all into account for this week's Power Rankings. To right any wrongs in these rankings, click here and give us a few Rank Comments of your own.

Team PVS W-L-T-RT ESPN.com says
1.   Maple Leafs 8 9-3-1-0 One goal against in three games makes Ken Dryden very proud.
2.   Coyotes 4 8-2-3-0 Jeremy Roenick has six goals and 13 points in eight games. Can we please stop with the trade rumors?
3.   Kings 7 8-3-2-0 Averaging 3.46 goals per game and giving up almost a whole goal less per game.
4.   Senators 2 8-3-1-1 Whether the deadline is Nov. 8 or Dec. 4, it doesn't look like Alexei Yashin will be around any time soon.
5.   Flyers 11 6-6-1-1 Where has Mark Recchi (6-14-20) been the last few years? Oh yeah, Montreal.
6.   Bruins 17 4-5-4-0 They're on a 4-0-1 tear and now have Byron Dafoe signed. It's still unconfirmed, but reportedly, coach Pat Burns was spotted smiling.
7.   Blues 6 7-4-0-0 Despite 3-1 week, doesn't it seem that every year the Blues are good but not great? Michal Handzus is the toughest guy you've never heard of.
8.   Red Wings 1 7-3-1-1 Losing two consecutive division games (one to woeful Chicago) qualifies as a slump.
9.   Sharks 10 9-5-1-0 Coach Darryl Sutter's squad is tied for most points in the league, but the Sharks have played two more games than anyone.
10. Devils 5 6-4-1-1 Money can't buy love. Saving money often buys mediocrity.
11. Canucks 14 7-4-2-1 If they continue to win the games they should, the playoffs are a possibility. Question remains whether they can play solid defense.
12. Hurricanes 15 5-3-3-0 Wednesday's home game against Toronto will go a long way toward legitimizing the 'Canes ... and winning over fans.
13. Panthers 13 6-5-1-2 Getting spanked 5-0 in Ottawa is a wake-up call. Panthers are good, but not that good.
14. Avalanche 9 5-6-2-1 Looking up at Canucks coach Marc Crawford in the standings must sting as does Chris Drury's one goal in 13 games.
15. Stars 3 6-5-1-0 Above .500 and in last place? Stars are better than this, but last year's long season might have taken a toll.
16. Mighty Ducks 18 6-6-1-1 Playing Jekyll and Hyde on offense; Capable of scoring seven goals in a game but have been shut out three times.
17. Predators 12 4-6-1-0 Three consecutive losses ended their .500 hopes. Three power-play goals in last three games (3-for-16).
18. Penguins 16 2-4-3-1 Jaromir Jagr and the Pens haven't won a game since Oct. 14 in New York vs. the Rangers.
19. Oilers 21 4-5-2-2 Winless on the road (0-4). With only 28 goals for, offense needs to pick it up.
20. Blackhawks 28 2-5-4-0 Two wins, including one on the road in Detroit, should boost confidence. Still winless at home.
21. Lightning 25 3-6-1-1 Dallas win was huge after allowing seven goals in Boston. Dan Cloutier should be starting the bulk of games from here on.
22. Sabres 22 3-7-2-0 Dominik Hasek's groin is in tough shape, but his absence actually might help the team play better.
23. Flames 24 3-8-2-0 An eye-popping 45 goals against in 13 games. That's seven more than any other team.
24. Capitals 19 2-6-2-0 What happens when your GM gets suspended for fighting? He gets a one-year contract extension.
25. Thrashers 27 2-6-2-1 Patrik Stefan (plus-2) is one of four players with a plus rating.
26. Rangers 20 4-7-2-0 Played more than 250 minutes without a goal. With their payroll, that's about $240,000 per minute of scoreless play.
27. Canadiens 23 3-8-1-0 Can't beat the Rangers at home, allowing the punchless Blueshirts to score ... twice.
28. Islanders 26 2-6-1-0 Every time the Isles land in the basement, they beat somebody. The Rangers might be prime for an Islander upset.
