With so much going on in today's NHL, it's easy to forget that a lot has happened in past years as well. Here's a look at some great moments in NHL history during the period Nov. 1-7:

Nov. 1, 1985: The Buffalo Sabres' Daren Puppa, age 20, became the 18th goaltender in history to record a shutout in his NHL debut when he blanked the defending Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers, 2-0.

Nov. 1, 1987: New York Islanders defenseman Denis Potvin played in his 1,000th NHL game, a 6-5 overtime win against the Bruins at Boston Garden.

Nov. 2, 1974: After eight games on the road, the Kansas City Scouts played their first home game at the new Kemper Arena, losing 4-3 to the Chicago Blackhawks. Chicago's Ivan Boldirev scored the first goal in the new building.

Nov. 3, 1940: Dick Irvin coached his first game with the Montreal Canadiens, a 1-1 tie with the Boston Bruins at the Forum. Irvin would go on to coach 15 seasons with Montreal, winning three Stanley Cups.

WAYNE GRETZKY
Gretzky notched assist No. 1,000 a full 12 years ago for the Oilers.

Nov. 4, 1987: Oilers center Wayne Gretzky scored three goals and two assists, raising his career assist total to 1,000, during Edmonton's 7-2 win over the New York Rangers. In the same game, Rangers center Marcel Dionne recorded one assist, the 999th of his career.

Nov. 5, 1983: Two NHL team records were set on this date in two different rinks. In Quebec, the Nordiques and the New York Rangers recorded the two fastest goals from the start of a period (14 seconds), two teams. Andre Savard scored for Quebec at 0:08 of the third period, and Pierre Larouche replied for the Rangers at 0:14. In Minnesota, the Chicago Blackhawks scored the fastest two goals from the start of a period, one team (21 seconds). Ken Yaremchuk scored for Chicago at 0:12 of the second period, and Darryl Sutter followed at 0:21.

Nov. 6, 1995: Mark Messier scored his 500th career goal in a 4-2 Rangers victory over Calgary at Madison Square Garden. His third goal of the game, at 12:32 of the third period against the Flames' Rick Tabaracci, enabled him to reach the milestone.

Nov. 7, 1968: Red Berenson of the St. Louis Blues established an NHL record for most goals scored in a road game (six). Berenson recorded his six goals on 10 shots against Philadelphia Flyers netminder Doug Favell, leading the Blues to an 8-0 triumph at the Spectrum. Four of Berenson's goals came within a span of 9:09 in the second period, tying the record for most goals in one period. The record, currently shared by 11 players, was accomplished most recently by Mario Lemieux on Jan. 26, 1997, at Montreal in the third period of 5-2 Penguins victory.

Nov. 7, 1975: The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers announced a blockbuster trade. The Rangers sent center Jean Ratelle, and defensemen Brad Park and Joe Zanussi to Boston in exchange for center Phil Esposito and defenseman Carol Vadnais.

Nov. 7, 1987: New York Rangers center Marcel Dionne became only the third player in NHL history to reach 1,000 career assists in a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Dionne joined Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky, who had reached the 1,000-assist mark three nights earlier. Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque, Mark Messier and Ron Francis have since joined the list.
