DENVER (AP) -- After spending the day in court, Patrick Roy didn't seem distracted in goal for the Colorado Avalanche.

Roy made 23 saves, and Joe Sakic and Shjon Podein scored second-period goals as the Avalanche beat the Minnesota Wild 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Earlier Tuesday, Roy pleaded innocent to misdemeanor criminal mischief for a dispute with his wife, Michele, early Sunday. If convicted, Roy faces up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. A conviction also could be grounds for deportation to Canada.

"Today, I was really focused and I was moving well," Roy said. "The four days off were perfect for me and the guys in front of me did a really super job."

Roy improved to 8-2-2 with his first shutout of the season and 49th of his career. Only Dallas' Ed Belfour, with 51 shutouts, is ahead of Roy among active goalies.

"It was maybe a tougher shutout than it seemed," Colorado coach Bob Hartley said. "Patrick came up with big saves in the third, and they kept coming at us with lots of second and third efforts from everyone."

Jamie McLennan made 25 saves for the expansion Wild, who have been shut out four times.

"We came out strong in the third even though we trailed by two goals," Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire said. "We got more chances than they did. It was just the puck didn't go in."

Sakic, who has two goals and three assists in his last three games, broke a scoreless tie midway through the second on a 4-on-4 situation following roughing penalties on Colorado's Dan Hinote and Minnesota's Aaron Gavey.

Aaron Miller muscled the puck down low to Alex Tanguay, who fed Sakic from behind the net. Sakic pushed the puck under McLennan's stick for the Colorado star's fourth goal of the season.

"It was a great play just to keep it in the zone," Sakic said. "Alex just threw it out front, I tried to shoot it high and it went in."

McLennan had trouble reacting to the shot.

"I didn't see it," McLennan said. "I didn't get a look at it."

Podein scored with 3:48 left in the period, taking a drop pass from Dave Reid and firing a slap shot past McLennan.

Roy preserved the shutout in the third period with diving saves on Andy Sutton and Filip Kuba.

"I thought tonight we played with a lot of discipline," Roy said. "We didn't try to force things when we didn't have to. The key was certainly taking the lead, which made things a lot different and a lot easier for our team."

Game notes
Lemaire's 58.6 percent winning percentage is seventh on the career list. Tommy Ivan is sixth at 58.7. ... Podein played in his 500th NHL game. ... Tanguay extended his point streak to three games with an assist. ... The Wild have lost six of eight road games.
