Laraque goal gives Oilers a tie

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Georges Laraque scored the game-tying goal at 13:48 of the third period as the Edmonton Oilers rallied from a three-goal deficit to tie the Phoenix Coyotes 3-3 on Sunday night.

First-period goals by Keith Tkachuk and Travis Green and a second-period score by Jeremy Roenick gave Phoenix a 3-0 lead. Roenick set up Tkachuk's goal for the 500th assist of his career.

But the Oilers continued their strong early season play, improving to 5-2-2 overall and 3-1-2 at home.

Ryan Smyth scored his fifth goal of the season at 11:37 of the second on a power play, cutting the lead to 3-1.

Jason Smith scored his first of the season at 5:40 of the third to make it 3-2 and Laraque tied it just over eight minutes later.

Laraque missed an open net, but retrieved the puck, skated around the back of the goal, and beat rookie goalie Robert Esche up high for his first goal of the season.

Esche made 36 saves, including a nice stop on Smyth in the last minute of overtime.

Despite blowing the lead, Phoenix (6-1-1) remained unbeaten in its last five games (4-0-1). Edmonton bounced back after losing its first game at home last Thursday to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Coyotes built their 3-0 lead on only eight shots against Tommy Salo, who made 12 saves.

Edmonton outshot Phoenix 39-15.

Game notes
Phoenix has scored 29 goals in its first eight games, an average of 3.63 per contest. ... Edmonton dominated the season series with the Coyotes last season, going 3-1 in four games, three of which were decided by one goal.
