Osgood turns back 46 shots for Wings

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- One flick of Kirk Maltby's wrist ended a long, long night of work for Chris Osgood.

Jamie Pushor
Columbus Blue Jackets' Jamie Pushor battled Boyd Devereaux for the puck early on in a game the Red Wings needed overtime to win.

Maltby scored 2:02 into overtime as the Detroit Red Wings kept the Columbus Blue Jackets winless at home with a 2-1 victory on Sunday night.

"I got lucky," Maltby said after his second goal of the season. "I don't know ... I just shot it to where I was thinking. I was just fortunate that it went in."

Columbus' Steve Heinze ended Osgood's shutout with 59.2 seconds left in regulation and forced the overtime.

After Osgood turned away two shots in the extra period, Sergei Fedorov glided through the point with the puck, then dumped it to Maltby on the right wing. Maltby lifted the puck over the left shoulder of Ron Tugnutt.

It was Detroit's only shot in overtime.

The game was dominated by the goalies, with Tugnutt turning away 34 shots and Osgood stopping all but one of expansion Columbus' franchise-record 47.

"I got a lot of work -- more than I expected," Osgood said after picking up his second win of the season against three losses.

At times it sounded and looked as if the game was being played at Joe Louis Arena instead of before a capacity crowd of 18,136 at Nationwide Arena. A large and vocal crowd of Detroit fans -- hundreds of whom wore Red Wings jerseys -- roared on every shot by their team.

"It's a loud rink and a fun place to play in," Osgood said.

The Blue Jackets fell to 0-3-0-1 at home. The only time they won in Columbus, they beat the Red Wings 5-2 in the first exhibition game ever at Nationwide.

Columbus lost its fifth in a row since the only regular-season victory in franchise history, 3-2 at Calgary on Oct. 12.

"They've had a lot of close games, especially early in the season," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. "I don't think they're going to wear down now. New teams want to prove they can play in the league."

The Red Wings took a 1-0 lead 4:34 into the second period, thanks to a sloppy power-play pass by Columbus' Steve Maltais, a former Red Wings forward who turned over the puck near the right wing in his attacking zone.

It resulted in a 4-on-1 the other way. Defenseman Todd Gill, recalled from Cincinnati of the American Hockey League four days ago, got credit for the goal when his pass for Fedorov deflected into the net off the stick of Blue Jackets defenseman Mattias Timander.

It was the first short-handed goal against the Blue Jackets. While the Detroit fans cheered, they were drowned out by Columbus fans who booed them.

It stayed that way until Columbus put on a furious assault in the final minutes of regulation.

Geoff Sanderson and Tyler Wright dug out a loose puck on the boards, with Sanderson controlling the puck and passing to Heinze at the right wing. His quick shot beat Osgood on the glove side and set off a loud celebration.

"We were firing the puck from everywhere, but it took us 59 minutes to get one," Tugnutt said. "I think the effort was really fantastic from the guys."

Both goalies had several sprawling, theatrical saves. Each team clanked a shot off the crossbar as well.

The Red Wings were without Steve Yzerman and Chris Chelios, both of whom had knee surgery last week, while defenseman Steve Duchesne was scratched because of knee problems. But Fedorov played even though he had a knee-to-knee collision in Buffalo on Saturday night and was limping after the game.

Game notes
Some of the biggest cheers of the night came when a skating chimpanzee, star of the motion picture "MVP", scored several goals during the first intermission. ... Maltais played in his 100th NHL game, with previous stints with Washington, Minnesota, Tampa Bay and Detroit. ... Florida, with nine, is the only team with fewer goals than Columbus' 13. ... Columbus continued to have problems on the power play. The Blue Jackets were 0-for-4, making them 3-for-37 on the season and 1-for-20 at home.
