Late Phoenix blitz buries Wings

DETROIT (AP) -- The Phoenix Coyotes didn't need another hat trick from Jeremy Roenick to win their sixth straight game Sunday.

Shane Doan scored two of Phoenix's four straight goals in the third period as the Coyotes rallied from a 2-0 deficit and beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3.

Louie DeBrusk scored his first goal in more than two years and goalie Bob Essensa remained unbeaten for the Coyotes, whose winning streak matches Boston for the longest in the NHL this season.

Roenick, who scored hat tricks in back-to-back wins over New Jersey and Colorado last week, didn't find the net this time. But his pass set up the goal from DeBrusk, his first since Nov. 26, 1997, that started the Coyotes' comeback.

"DeBrusk stepped up to the plate and got a big one for us," Doan said. "It got us going, it boosted our confidence and after that everyone was flying. We've had success coming back from deficits, so you have confidence."

Doan broke a 2-2 tie with 6:10 remaining on a wrist shot from the left point that went over the right shoulder of Detroit goalie Ken Wregget.

"It was a pretty good shot, but it's one a goaltender should've had," Wregget said. "They worked well down low. Things started to go better for them in the third period."

Doan added an empty-net goal with 53 seconds left that allowed the Coyotes to survive a goal from the Red Wings' Steve Duchesne with 19.2 seconds remaining.

"We were looking at the three games in 60 hours situation to see where we stood in the league," Phoenix coach Bob Francis said. "Starting with New Jersey, then Colorado and Detroit was a heckuva challenge."

Detroit had a 2-0 lead on goals from Larry Murphy and Brendan Shanahan before Phoenix rallied back.

"We should've kept coming. We should've kept forcing the play," Detroit's Chris Chelios said. "Instead, we were just content to get the puck out. We were up 2-0 and we changed our game. We just should've stuck with the game plan. It worked when we went up 2-0. We should've kept it going."

DeBrusk scored at 5:54 when he slipped Roenick's pass from behind the net through Wregget's legs. DeBrusk had played 79 scoreless games before he connected.

Trevor Letowski tied it when he dug his own rebound away from Wregget and put it in the net at 11:12.

Essensa (6-0-1) stopped 20 shots. He was starting in place of Sean Burke, who's out for at least six weeks after suffering a partially torn tendon in his right thumb Friday against Colorado.

"I didn't really know what to expect from this season. I signed the first day of camp, and now with Sean hurt I've had to pick up the slack," Essensa said. "It's always nice to come here and win. It doesn't happen often, so you relish the times that it does."

Wregget, making his second straight start for injured regular Chris Osgood, also had 20 saves.

"We played a good game," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. "It's just unfortunate they got some goals from guys you don't expect.

The Red Wings also played without injured forwards Kris Draper, Darren McCarty, Doug Brown, Sergei Fedorov and Tomas Holmstrom.
