Roenick helps Coyotes pound Canucks

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- Jeremy Roenick, who calls Vancouver one of his favorite cities because of the rain, doused the red-hot Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night.

Dallas Drake, Darby Hendrickson, Harry York, Alfie Michaud
Phoenix's Dallas Drake, center, scores on Canucks goalie Alfie Michaud while Darby Hendrickson, left, and Harry York fail to help.
Roenick had two goals and two assists, including his 800th career point, as the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Canucks 4-1 and snapped their three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1).

"This is one of my favorite cities without a doubt. It's peaceful, it's a beautiful city. And you sleep very well because it rains every day," said Roenick. "When you come up here, you're really relaxed."

Roenick can afford to be relaxed considering his domination of the Canucks. In 36 career games against Vancouver, Roenick now has 19 goals and 49 points.

The production couldn't have come at a better time as the Coyotes rebounded from an 0-1-1 skid, including Tuesday's 3-1 loss in Edmonton.

"There's no question my line did," said Roenick, when asked if the team wanted to make an early season statement. "We had a very subpar night there in Edmonton. We as top players don't accept that."

Added Teppo Numminen, who had two goals and an assist, "We haven't been playing the way we wanted. The Edmonton game was just terrible. ... It was an important game for us to get back on track."

Keith Tkachuk set up a pair as the Coyotes (6-2-3) matched a franchise record for most wins in the month of October, a mark the club has reached four other times, most recently going 6-4-2 in 1995. Goalie Mikhail Shtalenkov's shutout bid was foiled with under a second left in regulation when Bill Muckalt scored.

The Canucks not only lost the game, but their second goalie in the span of two weeks when Kevin Weekes left the game 5:52 into the first period experiencing a "twinge in his right knee." With Garth Snow out with a fractured finger, Alfie Michaud made his NHL debut.

Michaud, the Final Four MVP in the University of Maine's NCAA title win last spring, allowed a goal on his first shot on net, and finished the game making 20 stops.

Roenick, who entered the night with 799 points, opened the scoring 11:01 into the game when, standing atop the crease, he slid the puck in beneath Michaud during a scramble in front of the Vancouver net after the Canucks' Ed Jovanovski failed to clear the zone.

Roenick made it 2-0 with a minute left in the second period, deflecting in Numminen's point shot during a Coyotes' power play.

Numminen sealed the victory by scoring a pair of goals over a 2:43 span, giving the Coyotes a 4-0 lead by the 8:59 mark of the third period.

Canucks coach Marc Crawford said goaltending wasn't the problem. The trouble was with his team's lack of effort.

"We took our lumps tonight," said Crawford. "I thought we hung in there for two periods, but when we needed to be real sharp and real good, we weren't at the start of the third period."

As a precaution, Weekes did not return. He is listed as day to day and could be ready for action when the Canucks play host to Nashville on Saturday.

"It's never a good time for an injury, but let's hope that it isn't anything too serious," said Weekes, whose knee will be re-examined Friday.

With Snow not expected back for at least another two weeks, and no other goalie with NHL experience in the Canucks system, club president-general manager Brian Burke is intensifying his search for another proven netminder.

"I still want to get another guy in here even if (Weekes) is 100 percent," Burke said.
