DALLAS (AP) -- Olli Jokinen's goal with 1:28 left in overtime gave the New York Islanders a 4-3 victory over the depleted Dallas Stars on Friday night.

Jokinen got behind the Dallas defense, took a pass from Eric Cairns and lifted the puck over Stars goalie Manny Fernandez for his ninth goal of the season.

Dmitri Nabokov had scored the tying goal early in the third period for the Islanders, 3-1-1 in their last five games.

In the second period, Mike Modano became the Stars' all-time goal-scoring leader and Jamie Langenbrunner sent Dallas ahead 3-2.

Modano moved out of a tie with Brian Bellows with his 343rd career goal (32nd of the season) at 12:59 of the second period, tying the game at 2-2 on a power play.

Langenbrunner put the Stars ahead at 17:56, converting another power play from the left circle for his 11th goal.

The Stars thought they had scored the go-ahead goal 10 seconds earlier when the puck glanced off rookie Jon Sim's skate and past Islanders goalie Kevin Weekes. But after a replay review, it was ruled that Sim illegally kicked the puck into the net.

The Islanders made it 3-all at 1:07 of the third period when Nabokov scored his third goal of the season on a backhander from close range.

Dave Scatchard and Brad Isbister had first-period goals for the Islanders.

Center Joe Nieuwendyk, the MVP of the Stanley Cup Finals last June, returned to the Dallas lineup with a goal and an assist after missing 21 games due to a separated shoulder.

But the Stars were without seven injured regulars and No. 1 goalie Ed Belfour, who was scratched from the lineup for the second straight game while he is being evaluated by officials from the league's substance abuse program. Belfour was in police custody for more than six hours early Wednesday morning following a scuffle with a local hotel security guard. Police said Belfour had been drinking prior to the incident.

Belfour was charged with assault and resisting arrest. He will remain away from the team until the issue is resolved, making Manny Fernandez the starter and rookie Marty Turco the backup.

The Stars also played without right wing Brett Hull, who'll miss the next week while he tries to get healthy from a strained hip flexor, and defenseman Derian Hatcher, day-to-day with a strained Achilles tendon.

With Stars regulars Guy Carbonneau, Jere Lehtinen, Blake Sloan, Shawn Chambers, and Brian Skrudland out with injuries, coach Ken Hitchcock was forced to juggle his lines and defensive pairings.

Hitchcock, coaching his 356th game, was denied his 200th NHL victory. He would have become the fourth-fastest coach to reach the milestone in league history.

Nieuwendyk converted a power play on his first shot, 3:59 after the opening faceoff, for his 12th goal and a 1-0 advantage.

But the Islanders, 5-0 losers at Phoenix on Thursday, beat Fernandez twice over a span of 2:41 in the first period for a 2-1 lead. Scatchard got his 12th at 7:02 skating from behind the net, then Brad Isbister sent the Isles in front at 9:43 with his 16th on a power play rebound of his own shot.
