KANATA, Ontario (AP) -- Although the Ottawa Senators started sluggish, they finished with a flurry against the Phoenix Coyotes.

Igor Kravchuk scored the go-ahead, power-play goal early in the third period of the Ottawa Senators' 5-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night.

Kravchuk's blast from the left point just 30 seconds into the period beat Coyotes goalie Robert Esche over the shoulder to break a 2-2 tie as the Senators won their second straight.

"We were really pumped tonight," said Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, who had three assists, including one on Kravchuk's goal. "The first period was a bit (slow), after that we started to skate better (and) pass the puck quicker."

Marian Hossa and Shawn McEachern each had a goal and an assist for Ottawa, which has lost just twice in their last 13. Vaclav Prospal and Jason York also scored.

Rick Tocchet scored both goals for the Coyotes, who came into the game with the NHL's best road record at 12-6-2-0.

The Coyotes managed just 12 shots, including four in the third, on Senators goalie Patrick Lalime. Esche, playing in just his sixth NHL game, made 29 saves.

The Senators scored first for just the third time in their last 19 games when Hossa beat Esche with less than five minutes remaining in the first. Tocchet tied it 1-1 at 17:46.

Prospal, who has three goals and seven assists in his last eight, gave the Senators a 2-1 lead midway through the second period before Tocchet's breakaway goal tied it.

Ottawa added two late goals, including York's power-play score.

The Senators' power-play unit finished 2-for-3, while the Coyotes went 0-for-1.

"To get beat like that, in all aspects of the game, it's humbling," Coyotes coach Bob Francis said. "They were in our face all the time. The game was played on three-quarters of the ice."

The line of Prospal, McEachern and Alfredsson combined for six points. Alfredsson has 13 points in his last eight and McEachern has 11 in his last 10.

"We had chances earlier on, but Esche played well," said McEachern, who set up Prospal's goal midway through the second. "I can't think of another game we played as well.

"We had all four lines really playing well. We made a couple of mistakes on their goals, but other than that, we played real well."

Ottawa's leading scorer, Radek Bonk, missed his second straight game with the flu. Phoenix left wing Keith Tkachuk returned after missing four games with back spasms.

Phoenix defenseman Teppo Numminen extended his consecutive games-played streak to an NHL-best 337.

Earlier Thursday, Prospal escaped suspension for his ethnic slur against Montreal Canadiens defenseman Patrice Brisebois, but was told by the NHL he must attend a diversity-training session.

Prospal, who called Brisebois a "frog" -- punctuated by an obscenity -- in a Dec. 27 game, was told to come to New York to meet with NHL-appointed diversity trainer Zach Minor for further education and discussion regarding diversity-related issues.

The league deemed Prospal's public apology to French-Canadians as sufficient, especially because it was accepted by the Canadiens and Brisebois.

"I really don't have much to say," said Prospal, who has three goals and seven assists in his last eight games. "I'll go to the meeting. I don't have any problem with that. You can always learn."
