PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- New year, same old story for the red-hot Philadelphia Flyers.

Rod Brind'Amour and Mikael Renberg each had a goal and an assist as Philadelphia built a 3-0 lead, then fought the New York Islanders for a 3-2 victory Thursday night.

"We are a real physical team and our guys want teams to not want to come in here," coach Roger Neilson said after the Flyers extended the NHL's longest unbeaten string of the season to 14 games. "We are playing well in this building."

Daymond Langkow had a goal and Mark Recchi added three assists for the Flyers, who have outscored their opponents 49-28 while going 11-0-3 during their streak. Philadelphia is 4-0-1 in its last five overall.

Rookie centers Tim Connolly and Jorgen Jonsson scored for the Islanders, who fell behind early 3-0 and lost their fifth straight. Connolly's goal that put the Islanders on the board with 49 seconds left in the second period was a real wake-up call for the Flyers, according to Neilson.

"We had a pretty good focus most of the game, but I think that shook us up a bit," Neilson said. "Then they scored again, but to our credit, we tightened and they didn't get anything afterwards."

John Vanbiesbrouck, who has won three straight starts, made 19 saves for the Flyers, who outshot the Islanders 25-21. Afterwards, he praised New York.

"They have some good young talent and move the puck well," Vanbiesbrouck said. "They executed well after they scored their second goal, but we shut them down."

Philadelphia scored twice on the power play to increase its NHL lead to 42 goals with a man-advantage. The Flyers are 4-for-7 in their last two against the Islanders on the power play.

"We've had our tail between our legs and fallen on ourselves the last few games," Islanders coach Butch Goring said. "But tonight, I think we can leave the building with our heads up."

Brind'Amour, who missed the first 34 games of the season with a broken foot, put the Flyers ahead 1-0 at 6:25 of the first period with a one-timer from inside the left circle after taking a pass from Recchi from behind the net.

Renberg made it 2-0 at 9:55 when he redirected a slap shot by Recchi from just inside the blue line on a power play.

Langkow added another power-play goal on a slap shot from the slot that bounced high off the glove of Islanders goalie Kevin Weekes at 13:40 of the second period.

Connolly scored on a wrist shot from the front of the left circle after taking a pass from Dave Scatchard.

Bill Muckalt wrestled the puck from Philadelphia's Ulf Samuelsson at the blue line and fed Jonsson at the crease to set up the Islanders' second goal at 7:02 of the third period.

"We competed and battled really hard," Muckalt said. "But a couple of defensive mistakes cost us against a good hockey team like this."

Weekes was replaced by Roberto Luongo with 30.1 seconds left in the third period.

"I was just trying to buy a little time, that's all," Goring said when asked why he replaced Weekes.

Philadelphia's last home loss was 5-2 to Vancouver on Oct. 26. The Islanders are 0-6-1 on the road against the Flyers since a 4-3 victory on Nov. 4, 1996.
