| TJ's top five
 |
| Team | W-L | Comment |
| 1. Jaguars | 1-0 | Jacksonville's 41-3 rout of San Francisco was a complete victory by the NFL's most talented team.
 |
| 2. Packers | 1-0 | Gutty Brett Favre showed what he's made of	by playing with an injured thumb and rallying the Pack past the Raiders.
 |
| 3. Cowboys | 1-0 | The Cowboys defense was sketchy without Deion, but Troy Aikman and the offense shined.
 |
| 4. Patriots | 1-0 | The Pats would have found a way to lose this game with the Jets last season.
 |
| 5. Colts | 1-0 | The defense and QB Peyton Manning showed how much they've improved in the win over the Bills.

Surprise of the week:
Without Barry Sanders and eventually without Herman Moore, who was injured in the first half, the Lions stunned the Seahawks 28-20 in Mike Holmgren's Seattle debut. Plus, Charlie Batch and company made it look easy.
Coaching move of the week:
Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy finally ran out of patience with quarterback Trent Dilfer. Dungy's team lost a game in which the Giants gained 107 total yards and managed just four first downs. Dungy only made the change a little too late.
Rising this week:
The Colts. We knew they would be better, but they handled Doug Flutie and the Bills with ease in a 31-14 victory. Peyton Manning threw two TD passes to Marvin Harrison, and rookie Edgerrin James rumbled for 112 yards and a touchdown. Plus, that improved Indy defense had five sacks and forced three turnovers.
Falling this week:
The New York Jets. The loss of quarterback Vinny Testaverde could be devastating for a team picked by many as a Super Bowl contender.
Store it away:
Eric Zeier will start at quarterback for the Bucs next Sunday at Philadelphia.
