Baxter Bits: Packers vs. Broncos

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Packers make their first regular-season appearance at Mile High Stadium since 1990 as these interconference foes--and winners of the last three Super Bowls--battle in the regular season for the first time since 1996 (Packers managed a 27-12 victory this summer at Madison, Wisconsin).

The Broncos own a 5-3-1 overall advantage in the standings, the biggest of those victories a 31-24 conquest of the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

As for the teams' last regular-season clash, Green Bay rolled to a 41-6 victory in 1996 at Lambeau Field.

The Packers are 0-4 lifetime at Mile High Stadium dating back to 1975, their last visit resulting in a 22-13 setback in 1990.

Numbers: Since 1995 (78 games, including playoffs), Packers QB Brett Favre is 58-20, throwing for 142 touchdowns and just 45 interceptions in his 58 wins compared to 28 scores and 32 interceptions in 20 losses. Favre has thrown for 20,088 yards in those 78 games. In four games in '99, Packers RB Dorsey Levens has rushed for 379 yards and 1 touchdown, plus caught 24 passes for 240 yards. It is worth noting that the only player in NFL history to total 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season was San Francisco 49ers RB Roger Craig in 1985. In his last 21 games (including playoffs) dating back to '97, Levens has carried 439 times for 1,788 yards and 10 touchdowns, plus caught 94 passes for 751 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Packers have forced two or more turnovers in three straight games.

Including playoffs (1997-99), the Broncos are 33-2 when they total more rushing attempts than their opponent, 1-8 when Denver's opponent totals more rushing attempts. They have been limited to 16 or fewer points in four straight games. Denver has forced two or more turnovers in three straight games. They have totaled four or more sacks in three straight games.

Things To Look For: If not for the continued heroics of QB Brett Favre, the Packers might indeed find themselves in the same boat as the defending Super Bowl champions. Given the state of the battered Broncos' attack, now without RB Terrell Davis and TE Shannon Sharpe, and their very generous defense, it doesn't figure to be much of a contest. But that's what most were saying before Super Bowl XXXII.

Etc.:Since 1992, the Packers are 21-8 vs. AFC teams (22-9, including Super Bowls XXXI and XXXII), including 1-0 in '99. Including Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII, the Broncos are 13-6 vs. NFC teams under head coach Mike Shanahan dating back to 1995 (0-1 in '99). They are 2-6 in their last eight regular-season contests dating back to '98.
