About the play: Future Hall of Famer Cris Carter has had great success off this play during his career. The Vikings have made a ton of first downs in crucial situations with "Scat 85 Dodge." Keys to the play: Carter must not get held at the line of scrimmage. He must use his size to get into his route. This is a great route for big receivers because they can use their bodies to get position and give the quarterback a good target -- just like a good NBA rebounder. The whole key for Carter is to decipher whether the defense is in man-to-man or zone coverage and get his 6- to 8-yard depth. The quarterback takes five steps and reads Carter, so timing is paramount. Carter has the option to break out if the defense plays on his inside. If they play off, he will hook up and show his numbers to the quarterback. If he can run away inside, he'll take that route. Critical player: The X receiver (Jake Reed) must be able to run his comeback at 18 yards. He is the second option and will catch a pass many times on this play. He cannot just expect Carter to beat his man, because if the defense squeezes Carter, then the quarterback can work his way outside to Reed for a nice completion. When to expect the play: Expect this play on first, second and third downs. This is a very high-percentage play that the Vikings practice all the time. They execute it better than any team in the NFL. This play has become a security blanket for Minnesota. Defensive strategy: This play is very difficult to stop if the detail is there for Minnesota. Defensively, the Packers must play physical against Carter and not let him release without being pounded on. The best way is to push him way down inside or force him wide and out of his lane. | ALSO SEE Playbook: Randy Moss' split right base right 989
