Tennessee Titans: A pair of restricted free agents, both of whom figure to have expanded roles with the Titans in 2003, have re-signed with the team. Defensive tackle Robaire Smith and tight end Erron Kinney, both three-year veterans, have each signed one-year contracts for $605,000. The players were given qualifying offers at that amount in February to retain a right of first refusal. Neither player received much interest in the restricted free-agent market. Barring contract extensions, the two will be eligible for unrestricted free agency in 2004. Smith, 25, figures to move into the lineup full-time in 2003, after starting only twice in the first three years of his career. Playing in the tackle rotation in '02, he registered 73 tackles, a career best, and also had 2½ sacks. The former Michigan State standout, a sixth-round choice in 2000, has demonstrated improvement every season. He posted 22 tackles and 4½ sacks his first two seasons in the league. A third-round choice in 2000, Kinney, 25, has appeared in 44 games and started in 26 of them in three seasons, and has seen considerable playing time, since the Titans frequently use a two-tight end alignment. The former University of Florida star has 57 receptions for 633 yards and two touchdowns in his career. Kinney started seven games in 2002 and had 13 catches for 173 yards. Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons added depth at linebacker Tuesday, re-signing unrestricted free agent Sam Rogers, a nine-year veteran. Rogers, 32, started 13 games for the Falcons in 2002, most of them at the weakside spot. He registered 74 tackles and a career-high 6 ½ sacks, while forcing two fumbles and also recovering two. The contract is for one year and the base salary is $655,000. Although second-year pro Will Overstreet is expected to be the weakside starter in '03, after missing much of his rookie campaign because of shoulder surgery, the Falcons had maintained a dialogue with Rogers and made it clear they wanted him to return. Because of his versatility and familiarity with the 3-4 scheme of coordinator Wade Phillips, he is a valuable insurance policy. A second-round choice of the Bills in the 1994 draft, Rogers spent the first eight seasons of his career in Buffalo before being released in the spring of 2001 for salary cap reasons. He played the '01 season with San Diego and then signed with Atlanta last year. His career totals include 575 tackles, 29 sacks, two interceptions, 11 passes defensed and eight forced fumbles. He has played in 117 games and started 92 of them.
