Barrett signs new one-year deal

ESPN.com news services

Arizona Cardinals: Three-year veteran cornerback David Barrett, who enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2002 for the Cardinals, has re-signed with the team.

A restricted free agent, Barrett signed a one-year contract for $1.318 million, the amount of the qualifying offer the club made to him in February to retain a right of first refusal on his services. The offer was reflective of Barrett's importance to the Cardinals, who could have made him a qualifying tender as low as $605,000.

Barrett, 25, started 14 games at right cornerback last season, and registered 82 tackles, three interceptions and 10 passes defensed, all career highs, and also added one fumble recovery and a forced fumble. He missed the final two games with a hip flexor injury.

The former Arkansas standout was a fourth-round choice in the 2002 draft. For his career, he has appeared in 46 games and started 23 times. He has 163 tackles, five interceptions and 20 passes defensed.
