Miami Dolphins: Safety Sammy Knight, who made the Pro Bowl with the New Orleans Saints in 2001, received a free-agent contract offer from the Dolphins on Tuesday.
The Saints decided against trying to keep Knight after last season, saying they wanted more speed at safety. In Miami, Knight would compete for a starting job with incumbent Arturo Freeman.
Miami coach Dave Wannstedt said Knight could learn the Dolphins' scheme quickly.
"He's one of the smartest players that we've had through here in free agency,'' Wannstedt said. "The learning part and him being ready to play would not be an issue.
"We'd like to have him, but we're not pressed. I think he would make our team better.''
Knight's agent didn't return a phone call seeking comment. San Francisco 49ers: The 49ers re-signed kick returner Jimmy Williams on Tuesday.
Williams was leading the NFL in punt return average last season when he tore two major ligaments in his left knee against Dallas in December. He was averaging 16.8 yards per punt return and 21.9 yards per kickoff return.
Williams, an exclusive-rights free agent, got a one-year deal worth $375,000. He is expected to be fully healthy for training camp. |
