Jags searching for fourth kicker this season

Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars added yet another chapter to their comedy of kickers Tuesday, cutting Richie Cunningham after one game to make way for the team's fourth kicker of the season.

Cunningham made both his extra-point attempts and a 23-yard field goal Sunday in a 25-23 loss to Pittsburgh. But he didn't execute an onside kick correctly, and he struggled with the depth of his kickoffs.

Adding insult to the whole situation was that Steelers rookie Jeff Reed went 6-for-6 on field goals and the Jaguars had given Reed a tryout in October when they cut their first kicker, rookie Hayden Epstein.

Coughlin said Monday he wasn't impressed with Reed's consistency during the tryout and felt he couldn't replace one rookie with another.

"That was a big part of our decision,'' Coughlin said.

So the Jaguars went with Tim Seder, who had been cut by the Cowboys in the preseason. He lasted five games, then Coughlin cut him to make way for Cunningham, who had been out of football for about two years, and lasted less than a week in Jacksonville.

Epstein began the season as the kicker but made just five of nine field goal tries and 12 of 13 extra points in seven games. Seder then kicked in five games and converted eight of 12 field goal tries and all 11 extra points, but was also cut after a poor onside kick attempt.

The Jaguars are expected to sign their next kicker Wednesday. There are very few "name'' kickers available right now. One of the few is James Tuthill, who was cut by the Washington Redskins on Monday in favor of Jose Cortez, formerly of the 49ers.
