Coughlin complains to NFL about Rolle's hit

Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mark Brunell woke up with a headache Monday. One of his key protectors, right tackle Maurice Williams, hobbled around on crutches.

The Jacksonville Jaguars lost Williams for the season with a broken leg and will have to wait a while to determine the status of Brunell, who still was feeling the effects of a moderate concussion Monday.

The Jaguars, who fell to 3-2 with their 23-14 loss to Tennessee on Sunday, escaped the injury bug through the first quarter of the season, but the lucky streak ended.

"You're always going to have to shuffle,'' coach Tom Coughlin said. "That's just the way it is.''

Before worrying about next week, however, Coughlin was on the phone with the NFL office Monday complaining about the helmet-to-helmet hit Tennessee's Samari Rolle put on Brunell to knock him out of the game.

The hit was illegal and no penalty was called.

"Do I have a problem with it? Yeah, I have a problem with it,'' Coughlin said. "If all you have to do is hit the quarterback in the helmet, knock him out of the game and pay the fine, I don't know that that's the issue.''

The NFL had not yet announced a fine on Rolle, although Coughlin said he expected it.

Brunell was not available for comment.

Coughlin said Williams will go on injured reserve -- a move that will be a significant blow to the Jaguars.

"I've just got to rehab as hard as I can and be ready for next year,'' Williams said.

The second-year tackle out of Michigan was rapidly developing into a top-line blocker, and his loss will force Coughlin to make adjustments.

The choices are to play backup Todd Fordham, who allowed two sacks to Kevin Carter in relief on Sunday, or to move Zach Wiegert from left to right tackle and give rookie Mike Pearson a chance on the left side.

"I feel I'm ready to go in there and give it a shot,'' Pearson said.

Coughlin, however, said he wasn't ready to discuss his options.

The coach said he's confident Brunell will return.

Brunell's only other concussion in the NFL came last October when Gerard Warren of the Browns cheap-shotted him while blocking on an interception return -- a helmet-to-helmet hit that cost Warren $35,000.

Brunell struggled in his first game back from the concussion, going 21-for-39 in a 24-15 loss to Seattle.
