NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Jacksonville quarterback Mark Brunell said he expects to play against Baltimore next week despite getting a concussion in the first quarter of Sunday's 23-14 loss to the Tennessee Titans. "From what I can tell, we're only going to miss out on one guy next week, and that's Mo,'' Brunell said of right tackle Maurice Williams, who broke his right leg during the game. Brunell, who had a concussion in the third week last season against the Browns, was knocked out of bounds by Titans cornerback Samari Rolle at the right sideline as he threw away the ball. "I'm sure there will be no contact (for Brunell) this week," Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin said. "Whether he can practice Wednesday is something I'll have to be informed by the doctors about." Brunell, the NFL's second-rated quarterback coming into the game, returned for the next series and completed two passes before his head hurt too much to keep playing. He said his head hurt worse than when he got his last concussion. "Overall, everything was just a little bit more severe, foggy,'' he said. "My head is pounding pretty hard, and it wasn't as clear as it should have been, as far as getting the plays called and seeing the defense.'' Rolle was not penalized on the play, but he insisted that Brunell was out of the pocket when he hit the quarterback. "I was not trying to hurt him,'' Rolle said. "I just tried to run through him. People take shots at Steve (McNair) all the time. That's just part of the game.'' Jacksonville was forced to go with rookie David Garrard, a fourth-round draft pick from East Carolina. "When Mark came out, we had to adjust the plan somewhat and taper it to where we felt that David was going to be comfortable instead of a lot of different formations,'' Coughlin said. Garrard had appeared in one other game this season and lost 2 yards on two carries. On Sunday, he handed off to Fred Taylor once and then tossed his first pass, which was intercepted by Tennessee cornerback Andre Dyson. He was intercepted on his final pass as he tried to rally the Jaguars when Lance Schulters picked off the ball at the Tennessee 6 with 3:37 left. He was 4-of-7 for 53 yards and rushed seven times for 71 yards and two touchdowns. |
