Boyd is latest kicker to get shot with Jaguars

It's a good thing the Jacksonville Jaguars have only four games remaining in the season because, given the rate at which coach Tom Coughlin is going through kickers, there might not be enough candidates to fill his needs.

The Jaguars made yet another switch at the position on Tuesday afternoon, releasing Richie Cunningham after one game, and then signing free agent Danny Boyd later in the day. The release of Cunningham makes the former Dallas veteran the third placement specialist to be fired this season.

Fittingly, there was no name placard above Boyd's locker when he reported for duty.

"It's day to day,'' Boyd said when asked about how he'll approach his new job.

Boyd, 22, made all 10 field goal attempts during an audition that included free agent kickers Jake Arians and Steve Videtich.

A former LSU standout, Boyd was in the New York Jets camp this summer and spent three weeks on the New York Giants practice squad. He formerly played in the NFL Europe League and in arenafootball2. Contract details on his deal were not immediately available.

Assuming he attempts either a field goal or extra point in Sunday's game, Boyd will become the fourth player for the Jaguars this season to register a placement attempt. He is Jacksonville's fourth different kicker in a stretch of just eight games.

Ironically, the Jaguars had just one player, Mike Hollis, attempt either a field goal or extra point in the first seven seasons of their existence. Hollis exited this spring as an unrestricted free agent, signing with the Buffalo Bills.

Cunningham joined Hayden Epstein and veteran Tim Seder as kickers released by the Jags in 2002. He converted his only field goal attempt and both extra point tries in last Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but Coughlin was unhappy with his execution of a late-game onside kick and also felt his kickoffs were not deep enough.

Epstein began the season as the kicker but the rookie made just five of nine field goal tries and 12 of 13 extra points in six games. Seder then kicked in five games and converted eight of 12 field goal tries and all 11 extra points, but was also cut after a poor onside kick attempt.
