Injury updates around the NFL

By John Clayton

Here's the latest news on key injuries going into Week 2:

John Clayton's injury updates
Team Comment
The Cardinals may be down two fullbacks if Joel Makovicka can't play Sunday against the Seahawks because of a hamstring injury. Backup Dennis McKinley is out because of a hamstring injury along with right tackle Anthony Clement (torn triceps). That means that Steve Bush, a tight end, may have to handle some of the fullback chores. Makovicka practiced Friday and might be able to play. Safety Adrian Wilson had a good week of practice but he will have to test out his dislocated shoulder. Wilson will start. Coach Dave McGinnis has to decide whether to take first-round choice Wendell Bryant to Seattle. The team has a two-week roster exemption after signing him, but he probably won't play Sunday and they may leave him behind.
The Falcons, who were down four linebackers because of injuries in the opener, will have nine linebackers available for their home-opener against the Bears. John Thierry (hip) was upgraded this week from questionable to probable. He'll start on the outside along with Matt Stewart. John Holecek and Keith Brooking will start on the inside. Coach Dan Reeves upgraded linebackers Chris Draft (hamstring), Mark Simoneau (groin) and Artie Ulmer (knee) from doubtful to probable. Juran Bolden will start for the suspended Ray Buchanan at cornerback. Defensive end Travis Hall is out with his groin injury. Patrick Kerney and Brady Smith will start at the ends. The only linebacker who will miss the game will be rookie Will Overstreet, who is out with a shoulder injury. Punt-returner Allen Rossum was added to the injury list as questionable with a hamstring injury.
Ravens wide receiver Travis Taylor practiced Friday after missing Thursday's session because of shoulder injury. He's listed as questionable, but the fact that he practiced gives him a chance of playing. The Ravens will again be thin in the secondary. Rookie safety Will Demps was downgraded from doubtful to out because of his elbow injury. Cornerback James Trapp was downgraded from questionable to doubtful after not practicing because of a chest injury.
The Bills are completely healthy going into the Vikings game. The only player on the injury report is cornerback Chris Watson, who is probable with a hip injury. The cornerback position will be one to watch this week. Bills cornerback Nate Clements said in preseason that he's eager to face Randy Moss to see what all the hooting and hollering is about. Moss, who caught six passes in the opener, wants to have a big game against the Bills.
The Panthers will be without three players for the Lions game -- halfback DeShaun Foster (knee), defensive end Kemp Rasmussen (hamstring) and cornerback Dante Wesley (groin). Wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad (shoulder) and guard James Nesbit (ankle) practice and will start. Nesbit ended a streak of 32 consecutive starts last week when he missed the opener. Panthers wide receiver Isaac Byrd was fined $5,000 for an illegal crackback block in the opener.
Michael Westbrook gets his first start as a Bengals receiver on the other side of Peter Warrick. Westbrook didn't get the start last week because he was still recovering from a broken wrist. The Bengals downgraded defensive end Vaughn Booker to doubtful because of a leg injury. Bernard Whittington starts for him. Backup halfback Brandon Bennett was downgraded to doubtful Thursday and may not play because of an ankle injury. Rudi Johnson will be on the active roster to fill his role just in case. As promised, coach Dick LeBeau made some starting lineup changes, but they weren't extensive because of injuries. Jo Juan Armour and Cory Hall will be the starting safeties. Converted cornerback Mark Roman goes to the bench. Adrian Ross gets the start at left outside linebacker, but part of the reason is because Canute Curtis has a knee injury and is questionable.
The Bears added tight end Fred Baxter to the injury report because of the flu, but they expect him to be able to play Sunday's game in Atlanta. The question for this game is going to be how much the Bears use the tight end. They want to pound the ball with a running attack against the Falcons, but if Baxter isn't 100 percent, they may replace him with a receiver and throw more short passes. The defense has to adjust for the next month after losing two of its core players -- defensive end Phillip Daniels (ankle) and cornerback R.W. McQuarters (knee). That put a lot of pressure on cornerbacks Jerry Azumah and McQuarters' replacement, Todd McMillon. Keith McKenzie replaces Daniels.
Kelly Holcomb will be the Browns starting quarterback for the game against the Bengals on Sunday, but it looks as though Tim Couch will be available as the backup. Couch had his best day of throwing Friday. He vows to be able to start next week against the Titans. Expect William Green, who was scheduled to start last week, to be the starting halfback. Jamel White ended up as the starter. Green missed practice time because of a sore back last week. The back is fine this week. The Browns have made several changes on their offensive line because of injuries. Center Dave Wohlabaugh will only be available for backup duty because of a broken right hand. Shaun O'Hara takes over for him. Roger Chanoine starts at right tackle for Ryan Tucker, who has a knee injury. Paul Zukauskas gets a start at guard.
Cowboys cornerback Bryant Westbrook went from starter to off the roster in a matter of a week. Westbrook was burned for a touchdown and had an interference call against him in the opening loss to the Houston Texans. All week, the Cowboys were debating rotating him with Duane Hawthorne, using Westbrook on running downs and Hawthorne on passing down. Instead, they cut him on Friday, giving Hawthorne the start on all down. The Cowboys added linebacker Louis Mackey to the roster. Westbrook signed a one-year, $875,000 contract that included a $125,000 signing bonus. Because his contract was guaranteed after the start of the season, Westbrook will keep all the money. Reggie Swinton practiced and even though he is listed as doubtful with a hamstring, he could be available to help out on special teams.
The Broncos will be without guard Lennie Friedman, who is coming back from a broken thumb. Friedman practiced, but Ben Hamilton will start at left guard. Wide receiver Kevin Kasper practiced despite sore ribs, but coach Mike Shanahan has to decide whether or not to put him on the active roster.
Don't count on defensive tackle Luther Elliss playing on his quad injury even though he wants to give it a go against the Panthers. Elliss did a little bit of work Friday but he won't know until gametime whether he could play. Halfback James Stewart says he's fine and is much better than a week ago. Stewart couldn't play in the opener because his knee bothered him. Stewart has worked all week and the knee is much better. Stockar McDougle is expected to get some work at right tackle but Kerlin Blaise is supposed to start.
The Packers added halfback Ahman Green to the injury report as probable because of dehydration. Green missed practiced Friday but he is expected to play against the Saints on Sunday. Safety Darren Sharper was also added because of an ankle injury, but he, too, is probable and should play. Defensive tackle Gilbert Brown, listed as questionable, practiced Friday and thinks he will be ready for the Saints game.
The Texans are down three offensive linemen for their game against the Chargers. Tackles Ryan Young (groin) and Tony Boselli (shoulder) won't play. Neither will guard Ryan Schau (knee). The Texans added linebacker Jason Lamar to the list as questionable with a calf injury. The seven players who were listed as probable, including running back Jonathan Wells, practiced Friday and are expected to be available for the game.
Colts tight end Marcus Pollard did a little work Friday but he's doubtful for Sunday's game against the Dolphins. The Colts will probably open in a three-receiver set, but Joe Dean Davenport will get most of the action at tight end. The Colts will be without three players -- defensive tackles James Cannida (knee) and Josh Williams (foot) and fullback Jim Finn (foot). The league vetoes Peyton Manning's request to wear high blacktop shoes Sunday in honor of the late Johnny Unitas. Manning received approval from Unitas' family to wear the blacktops. The league said no.
The Jaguars are healthy heading into Sunday's game against the Chiefs. Defensive end Tony Brackens will share time at defensive end Paul Spicer because both players are too banged up to play 60 or more snaps. Brackens has a knee injury. Spicer has a bad foot that a player stepped on. Linebacker Eric Westmoreland was held out of contact work Friday coming off a concussion. He's probable and is expected to play.
Chiefs defensive end Eric Hicks worked a little with the first team Friday, giving some hope that he will play Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Hicks is questionable with an ankle injury. The Chiefs were considering moving John Browning from tackle to end and giving rookie Ryan Sims the start, but the sight of Hicks on the field has put that consideration on hold. Rich Owens would have gotten the start for sure if Hicks were out. Sims is expected to see significantly more playing time than last week. Defensive tackle Eric Downing (abdomen) and linebacker Larry Atkins (calf) aren't expected to play.
Ricky Williams says his shoulder is bothering him. He says that he may need an operation in the offseason. But he's not on the injury report and he will play Sunday against the Colts. The Dolphins will be without tight end Desmond Clark, who is about a week away from recovering from a fractured forearm. Defensive end David Bowens may be available for backup duties. He's questionable with a hand injury. The iffiest player is safety Scott McGarrahan, who is questionable with a groin injury. The biggest question involved cornerback Sam Madison, but he has practiced all week on his sore ankle and should be fine going into the Colts game.
Tight end Byron Chamberlain is pushing the Vikings to play Sunday against the Bills, but that may not happen. Coach Mike Tice was pessimistic after practice. The coaches are reluctant to have him play on his sore knee. They don't want the injury to get worse. Chamberlain is listed as questionable, but expect him to be a scratch. His work in practice has only been limited this week. Kick returner Nick Davis may miss the game because of a hamstring injury. Davis went fullspeed in practice. Halfback Michael Bennett will able to play despite a shoulder injury that has him listed as probable. Wide receiver D'Wayne Bates has been added to the list as probable (foot), but is expected to play.
The only injury issue for the Patriots involves linebacker Roman Phifer, who didn't practice Friday and will probably miss the Jets game because of a leg injury. He will be replaced by Willie McGinest in the starting lineup. Backup guard Steve Neal is questionable with a shoulder injury. Safety Victor Green is practicing despite a leg injury.
Saints coach Jim Haslett doesn't expect to have cornerback Fred Thomas, who had surgery this week to fix a break in his hands. Thomas will probably be ready to go next week. Michael Hawthorne takes Thomas' place in the starting lineup. Punter Toby Gowin should be able to punt after missing the first game with a quad injury.
Giants halfback Tiki Barber practiced again Friday and he plans to play through his sore toe. Barber, who played in the opener despite a hamstring injury, has had a painful week of practice after someone stepped on the top of a foot. Barber has been getting better each day but he knows that the foot will be sore heading into the Rams game. The Giants without wide receiver Tim Carter (ribs) and center Dusty Zeigler (knee). The Giants have seven other players on their injury as probable. All practiced on Friday and all will be able to play.
Jets halfback Curtis Martin was upgraded from questionable to probable and handled most of the first team reps over the past couple of days. The Jets host the rival Patriots Sunday. Martin has been slowed by an ankle injury that put him on the injury report as questionable, but he eased any questions by running well Friday. The only Jets expected to miss this game are backup rookie tackle Chris Smith (knee) and backup cornerback Jamie Henderson (shoulder). Defensive tackle Larry Webster is expected to play in a backup role after missing last week with a quad injury.
The Raiders added Pro Bowl defensive tackle Sam Adams to the injury report, but barring any major setback, he should be able to start. Adams has a sore knee. Coach Bill Callahan said he was questionable but that he expects him to play. Adams participated in 28 plays last Sunday against the Seahawks and expects to be involved more in trying to stop the Steelers running attack. For the second consecutive game, Kevin Stemke will replace injured Shane Lechler as the punter. Lechler, who has a calf injury, should be back next week. Wide receiver James Jett may not play because of a calf injury but he was deactivated last week. Guard Mo Collins is out with a knee injury and will be replaced by Matt Stinchcomb. Defensive tackle Rod Coleman is questionable with an ankle injury and will be iffy until game time. Fullback Zack Crockett may be able to play after suffering a neck injury last week. Tyrone Wheatley is practicing despite a quad and hip injury.
Andy Reid's biggest questions going into the Monday night game are whether outside linebacker Carlos Emmons can play despite a bad hamstring. Emmons is listed as doubtful. The Eagles defense will be thinner without defensive end Derrick Burgess (foot). Guard John Welbourn is out with a broken leg. The Eagles visit the Redskins Monday night.
Looks as though the Steelers will start rookie Kendall Simmons for Oliver Ross at right guard, but the decision has nothing to do with injuries. Ross struggled in the opener. The Steelers hope that center Jeff Hartings will be able to play on his sore knee. Hartings sprained a medial collateral knee ligament in the opener. He's been practicing and may be able to go. Larry Foote, a rookie, starts for inside linebacker Kendrell Bell, who is out with an ankle injury. Although Joey Porter is listed as questionable with a shoulder injury, he will be able to play but the team has to decide if they also want to keep him on the nickel pass coverage team.
The Rams are reasonable healthy heading into their home opener. Tight end Ernie Conwell practiced and should be able to play despite a neck stinger. Wide receiver Troy Edwards will probably be deactivated. He's probable with a knee injury. The Rams won't have fullback James Hodgins, who has a broken foot.
The Chargers will go into the game with young fill-ins at two key positions. Vernon Fox replaces starting strong safety Rodney Harrison, out with a groin injury. Michael Keathley will take over for Toniu Fonoti, who is out with a shoulder injury. Backup tight end Justin Peelle practiced on Friday despite being listed as questionable with an ankle injury.
The 49ers are banged up at middle linebacker but are in overall good shape heading into the Denver game. Jamie Winborn was added to the injury report with a minor injury, but practice on Friday and will start. Linebacker Jeff Ulbrich is making progress on his knee and may be available as a backup. Defensive tackle Jim Flanigan is questionable with a hamstring, but the 49ers need him because Bryant Young and Dana Stubblefield had to do most of the work in the Giants game. Defensive end Andre Carter was removed from the injury list. He had been on the list with a knee injury. Tackle Matt Willig is out after recently undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery.
Quarterback Trent Dilfer had his best day throwing the ball this week and was pronounced as fit by coach Mike Holmgren to start against the Cardinals on Sunday. He has bounced back two weeks early from an MCL injury and was throwing with excellent speed in Friday's session. Defensive back Lamar King was given the day off because of a calf injury. Holmgren plans to give him a couple of days off until the injury gets better. Seattle is down two starters -- linebacker Anthony Simmons (high ankle sprain) and defensive lineman John Randle.
Bucs wide receiver Keenan McCardell practiced Friday and even though he is listed as questionable, it looks like he will play. Cosey Coleman, who missed the opener with a knee injury, returns to the starting lineup. Coach Jon Gruden said there will be a game day decision at right tackle. Cornell Green started last week for Kenyatta Walker, who was deactivated.
The biggest worry for coach Jeff Fisher is the health of middle linebacker Randall Godfrey, who has been slowed by an ankle injury. Godfrey didn't practice Friday and is questionable. Fisher won't know until game time against the Cowboys if he will start. He's also uncertain about the tight end position. Erron Kinney didn't practice Friday because of his ankle problems and Shad Meier isn't expected to play because of a shoulder injury. Frank Chamberlin will replace Kinney. The Titans are also with halfback Robert Holcombe (hip) and defensive end Jevon Kearse.
Redskins defensive tackle Daryl Gardener had a pain-blocking injection Friday to help his aching back. This shot was different than the epidural injection he took recently. Coach Steve Spurrier isn't optimistic that Gardener will play in the Monday night game against the Eagles, but he really won't know until Sunday. It takes 48 hours for the injection to take hold. Halfback Stephen Davis has passed all of his running challenges and will play and start despite a painful groin injury. How much pain he endures will determine how well he will play in this game. The Redskins will be without linebacker Antonio Pierce (ankle) and tight end Walter Rasby (knee). Backup linebacker Eddie Mason is probable with a shoulder injury.
