Defensive Bucs end two-game skid

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Warren Sapp refers to opposing quarterbacks as the "hunted" and the rookies as "fresh meat."

On Sunday it was Cade McNown's turn to run from the NFL sack leader, who led a solid defensive effort that gave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Bears.

Martin Gramatica
Martin Gramatica provided all the scoring for Tampa Bay on Sunday, booting field goals from distances of 49 and 34 yards.
Martin Gramatica kicked two first-half field goals for Tampa Bay (3-3), and the Bucs kept the Bears off the scoreboard until an ineffective McNown was benched.

It was the fewest points the Bucs have scored in a victory since a 3-0 win over Kansas City in the 1979 regular-season finale.

"I'd like to have a 38-0 blowout so I don't have to run around at the end of the game. But I'll take it," Sapp said. "I'd rather be talking about an ugly win than an ugly loss."

Jim Miller completed a 50-yard pass to Bobby Engram to set up a field goal for Chicago with 2:24 to go. The Bears (3-4) made one first down on their final possession before Derrick Brooks' second interception allowed Tampa Bay to run out the clock.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Bucs, who started the day ranked second in the NFL in total defense.

All three of Tampa Bay's wins have come against inexperienced quarterbacks. Sapp and his teammates sacked Doug Pederson and Donovan McNabb nine times in a victory over Philadelphia and held Brian Griese to 132 yards passing in a win against Denver.

McNown, making his second pro start in place of the injured Shane Matthews, completed 9 of 23 passes for 82 yards and was sacked twice -- once by Sapp, who was in the rookie's face all afternoon.

The sack was the seventh for the two-time Pro Bowl tackle, equaling his total last season. He shrugged off questions about the defense saving the day for the offense.

"They gave us enough points to win the game," Sapp said, "and that's all that counts."

GAME NOTES
Martin Gramatica was attempting to tie Rich Karlis (1982) and David Treadwell (1989), who both kicked 11 straight field goals at the beginning of their rookie years with Denver.
The Bears outgained the Bucs 272-225. Curtis Enis rushed for 69 yards on 20 carries. Marcus Robinson had five receptions for 80 yards.
Tampa Bay has won a franchise-best four straight games against Chicago.

Bears coach Dick Jauron changed quarterbacks late in the third quarter after McNown, rolling to his left, threw into coverage and was intercepted by Brooks at the Bucs 21.

Miller completed 10 of 22 passes for 117 yards. Chris Boniol missed a 44-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth quarter, but converted a 28-yarder when the Bears drove back into scoring position.

"Obviously it's a stumbling block, but I'm going to be back and I'll be fine," McNown said.

"It just adds a little fuel to the fire. I hate to go out there and not be as successful as I'm capable of being ... At the same time, it's not like this is the end. The best of the best will deal with stuff like this. I'm ready to move on."

Jauron said a decision on next week's starter won't be made until Wednesday, adding that benching McNown didn't signal a lack of confidence in the rookie.

"I just thought for this time, on this day, that was the thing to do to give us the best chance," the coach said. "It's an awfully tough defense, and they do a great job of disguising things for a young quarterback."

Mike Alstott rushed for 72 yards on 14 carries for Tampa Bay, but Trent Dilfer had another rough day at quarterback, going 16-of-27 for 121 yards.

The Bucs rushed for 220 yards in one of their two victories over Chicago last season, and the Bears knew they'd have to contain Alstott and Warrick Dunn to have a chance.

Criticized at times for being too conservative, Tampa Bay opened the game with five straight passes and threw on seven of eight plays before Gramatica kicked a 49-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.

That drive, though, would be Dilfer's most effective. Although the Bucs established the running game, with Alstott gaining 42 yards on five carries on the team's next possession, the lack of a consistent passing attack kept them from scoring more points.

Dilfer overthrew a wide-open Dunn on what would have been a first-quarter TD, threw behind receivers on several plays and at times delivered the ball short and low.

Gramatica kicked a 34-yard field goal that made it 6-0 after earlier hitting the left upright with a 43-yarder that would have tied the NFL rookie record of 11 consecutive field goals to start a career.
