Five fab freshmen to watch

By Beth Mowins
Special to ESPN.com

There has been a lot of talk about this season's superior senior class, but four years from now, these five fab freshmen will probably be the talk of the town.

For now, keep an eye on these rookies:

Duke freshmen class
Coach G has surrounded herself with some excellent freshmen. From upper right: Crystal White, Alana Beard, Vicki Krapohl, Rometra Craig and Iciss Tillis.
Alana Beard, Duke
Alana, a 5-foot-11guard-forward from Frierson, La., was impressive at the WBCA High School All America Game last spring and with USA Basketball last summer. She won four state championships in Louisiana, scoring more than 2,500 points. She has the potential to be very good, very quickly.

Diana Taurasi, Connecticut
Diana was the national player of the year last winter, scoring more than 3,000 points in her career. Yes, she can score, but she's an even better leader and passer. The 6-foot guard/forward from Chino, Calif., patterns her game after Magic Johnson.

Shereka Wright, Purdue
Shereka, a 5-10 forward from Copperas Cove, Texas, shined at the WBCA High School All-America game after capping a stellar prep career in Texas, where she was named the player of the year. She can score, run, rebound and block shots, and should be a great addition for the Boilermakers.

Nicole Powell, Stanford
Nicole was recently named Arizona's female athlete of the century after a fantastic career in Phoenix. The 6-2 forward is already working on making a move to the wing, where she'll be a key cog in the Cardinal's return to prominence.

Ashley Robinson, Tennessee
Ashley is leading the surge of tall young women completely at ease with their height. She's 6-5, agile, mobile and versatile. This center from Grand Prairie, Texas, can beat you inside and out and can't wait to take Tennessee back to the top.

Also check out: Aminata Yannii, Illinois; Ebony Hoffmann, USC

ESPN play-by-play announcer Beth Mowins will contribute a bi-weekly women's college basketball feature throughout the season.
