Editor's note: Ball State's Amy Zercher and Tamara Bowie will share a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season. This week, Zercher talks about the postseason picture. Feb. 26, 2001
We went 1-1 in our final two games of the regular season last week. Everyone else in the Mid-American Conference will play their final games of the regular season early this week. The MAC tournament starts Saturday with first-round games at campus sites for the fourth- through 13th-seeded teams. I wish I could tell you which team, or even if, we are playing on Saturday, but I can't. Right now, we do not control our destiny. We must sit and wait to see the outcomes of the final games this week. We still have a shot at the third seed for the tournament, but it depends on the results from other games. It's so weird to just sit and wait for once. I mean, every other time we have controlled the results. Ironically, now people who we hardly know control our team's future. Don't get me wrong, though -- we put ourselves into this position. At one point, we were in the driver's seat. Now, we are in a pile in the next seat back. But whatever happens, happens. We'll take whatever we get and make it work.
We have had a great season so far and overall. We are very proud of ourselves, but now is the time it really starts. This is why you work your butt off the other 27 games. Once the pairings are arranged, every team is 0-0 and every team has a new fire in its eyes. Last Wednesday we made the long trip to DeKalb, Ill., to battle the Northern Illinois Huskies . Even though we played better, we still did not play the way we had earlier in the year. It was a back-and-forth game, but in the end, Northern Illinois won 82-74. We arrived back in Muncie around 4:30 in the morning. The long ride home allowed for many us to think about the season and what still lies ahead. Saturday was a bittersweet day for the team. It was our Senior Day -- a time for celebration and retrospect. It is also an emotional time, as the realization of friends moving on and leaving sinks in. We were blessed with two amazing seniors this year -- Melannie Post and LaTisha Tucker. Mel and Tish are people you can't help but get along with. Their attitudes and work ethic were nothing short of awesome. They were true leaders for us everyday. Mel and Tish, we all love you and we wish you the very best! Have a great week, Z |
