What's the saying? The one with the ball last will win? That could apply for the Heisman Trophy race this year. Florida State's Chris Weinke, Oklahoma's Josh Heupel and Purdue's Drew Brees are in a shootout and the one who plays last, who's passes are the freshest in the minds of the voters may walk away with the Heisman. Weinke, after a 521 yard, 2 TD performance in the third-ranked Seminoles 54-7 thumping of then-No. 10 Clemson was enough to earn him five first place votes, 39 points and first place in ESPN.com's Heisman Poll. Heupel, who threw for 313 yards and had four TDs in the top-ranked Sooners' win over Baylor, earned three first place votes and placed second with 36 votes. Brees, who was on a bye last Saturday, earned the last first place vote and placed third with 32 points. Northwestern's Damien Anderson earned 11 points to place fourth and Nebraska's Eric Crouch finished fifth with eight points. Noteworthy in their absence in the top five are Virginia Tech's Michael Vick, who's injury marred effort against Miami all but doomed his campaign, and TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson, who's run at the Heisman lost steam when the Horned Frogs fell to San Jose State. The Heisman Poll features nine ESPN coaches, analysts and writers, and will appear weekly during the season. Panelists are asked to vote for their top five and players are awarded five points for a first-place vote, four for second and so on down the line.
Voters for the Heisman Poll are Lee Corso, Todd Christensen, Bill Curry, Rod Gilmore, Mike Gottfried, Kirk Herbstreit, Mel Kiper, Jr., John Mackovic and Gene Wojciechowski. |
