Brees soars up poll to tie Vick

ESPN.com

A few weeks ago, Purdue's Drew Brees nearly slipped off the poll but putting Purdue in the heat of the Rose Bowl race, he has put his name at the top of ESPN.com's Heisman Poll.

Brees threw for 274 yards and two TDs and rushed for 74 and a score in the Boilermakers' win over Wisconsin and earned four first place votes -- the most this week -- and 31 points.

Virginia Tech's Michael Vick is tied with Brees, but earned just two first place votes after passsing for just 75 yards and rushing for nine, although the rushing numbers are a bit misleading since he was sacked eight times for minus-60 yards.

Nebraska's Eric Crouch, who earned one first place vote, is third with 23 points, FSU's Chris Weinke, who earned one first palce vote, is fourth with 22 points and Oklahoma's Josh Heupel, who earned the final first place vote, is fifth with 18 points.

The Heisman Poll features nine ESPN coaches, analysts and writers, and will appear weekly during the season. Panelists are asked to vote for their top five and players are awarded five points for a first-place vote, four for second and so on down the line.
