October usually isn't the month in which Heisman Trophies are won. But for Purdue's Drew Brees, it might be the month in which he loses his chance at college football's greatest individual prize.
In the first of a grueling stretch of Big Ten games, Brees was stymied by the Michigan defense and failed to come through with a big performance. Brees didn't throw for 300 yards and was responsible for two costly turnovers.
If Brees wants to get back into the running, he should take a page out of Ron Dayne's book. A week after disappearing in the second half against Michigan, Dayne carried Wisconsin to a 42-17 shellacking of No. 9 Ohio State with four second-half touchdowns.
Also moving up was Shaun Alexander, who led Alabama to a gigantic upset of No. 3 Florida in The Swamp. Alexander tallied four touchdowns in an all-purpose performance which will be remembered for some time in 'Bama lore.
