FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU defensive lineman John Turntine declined to press charges against a Memphis reserve quarterback following a brawl at the conclusion of TCU's 27-20 win over the Tigers on Saturday.
"They wanted me to press charges, but I don't want to be the coward,'' Turntine told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram for its Sunday editions. "I'm playing on Dec. 31 and he's not. I'm a champion and he's not.''
TCU patrol officer John Carter told The Associated Press on Sunday that a report was made involving 18-year-old freshman Maurice Avery of Atlanta, but no charges were filed.
"The young man is not going to be arrested or anything else,'' Carter said. "They're going to let Conference USA do what they need to do.''
Officials said Avery used his helmet to strike Turntine on the back of the head. After the game, Turntine said he was feeling dazed.
The brawl started after Memphis' desperation fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the end zone with 2 seconds remaining. Players from both teams exchanged words and an unidentified official was injured in the ensuing fight.
The official suffered a head injury and was examined after the game. Crew chief Gil Gelbke wouldn't comment.
Officials eventually decided to end the game with 2 seconds left. With the win, TCU earned a berth in the Liberty Bowl and a share of the Conference USA title.
